Every year, my summer consist of my family and I traveling around the states. Boston Massachusetts, was one of the states that built the love and appreciation I have for nature. The Boston Tea Party Museum was located between Congress St and Seaport Blvd. The city its self was appealing. Trees and flowers you’d Normally see on the TV, Big Houses with paintings so bright you think it was painted every-week.The lawns was tidy, plantings and the trees were clipped to purity. Where I was standing, the sidewalks were smooth and clean. No cracks, no unruffled spots. It was the most errorless town I had ever seen. The museum was a long way from the neighbor I was at. The drive didn’t seem like it was half an hour; more like couple of minutes. From…

When asked about Nash Vansloten, Christopher Columbus’ accomplishments, one fifth grader responded, “Columbus found the Indians, and thought that there was an end of the world. At first, the Indians and Columbus weren’t friends, but then they became friends because of trading and stuff,” a sentiment is echoed throughout classrooms across America. The story of Christopher Columbus that one learns as a child contradicts reality, ultimately distorting the legitimacy of his discoveries, his respectful nature and his heroism.…

A second thing Columbus tries to convey Is the beauty of the islands he is landing at. During his accounts Columbus talks a lot about how the scenery Is beautiful, and that there is many beaches. An example of this is when he describes one of the islands saying “In the centre of it, there is a very large lake; there is no mountain, and all is so green that it is a pleasure to gaze upon it”. Columbus’s journal entries are filled with accounts like this where he describes the topography of the land he is encountering, and its beauty.…

I live in a country full of rich resources. Our weather is like a bittersweet lotion that replenishes the skin. People from all over the world come to my land for these things called "vacations". Vacations bring in nothing but good memories, smiles, and family. A vacation is a fairytale here in Columbia. The beautiful landscapes are just a pinch of reality that are on the brochures, websites, and posters. Sometimes when I look at these Americanized pictures of Columbia I wish I was there. The true story of Columbia starts in the city of Bogata located in the mountains. I am a young girl. I will not disclose my name or age because what I'm about to tell you about my culture and land are hands on things my soul has been through; which may upset…

One very long month later, everyone's bags were packed and we was off to Tennessee! After five lengthy hours and passing through a time zone, I spotted the breathtaking view of Nashville. As we entered our hotels parking lot, I got out of the car and stared in awe of all the bright colorful lights and building against the dark night sky. It was stunning. My family and I walked into the hotel to be greeted by a welcoming smile from the lady behind the desk. We got our room keys and went to out room. It was decorated with pictures of guitars and a warm welcoming goldish yellow wallpaper. Although it was already nine o'clock, our night had just began.…

We were going to Tennessee for my sister's softball tournament. We had just arrived at our really nice hotel. I could not wait to go inside and see what is was like. Upon arriving I discovered a very diverse place. Kids from all over the world went there and I soon became friends with many of them. To name a few; Win from Thailand became a close friend of mine whom I connected with during our long hours studying science. Then there was Richard and Prosper, two soccer players from Nigeria who loved to come and learn about lacrosse and American culture. These three individuals opened up a whole different world in my eyes. Win was here on orders from his government to receive a degree in Bioengineering, then was to return home to Thailand after completing college, and work for the government. Richard had not seen or talked to his family in over a year and Prosper talked about his life growing up on the streets and how soccer was what saved him. All lives very different from mine, and when I told them about my life I felt somewhat ashamed at the times I complained about walking to school or long practices. This experience enlightened me to different my life was from the rest of the world, but also how connected we…

The class material influenced my understanding of American history by giving me very graphic details about Columbus. It was never brought to my attention that he was so ruthless. All this time, Columbus Day has been looked at as a holiday that was for someone who was heroic at some point. After that reading, it’s disturbing to know that a guy who was essentially a mass murderer is recognized once a year. I feel like if more people were told the truth from the victims point of view, no one would want to celebrate this guy.…

Thinking back to my freshman year at Crandall High School, the first thing that comes to my mind is my first day. I walked in the door, only to be breath taken of how big the school was. This week was a short week with Thanksgiving right around the corner. After the kids came into the room and had silent reading for 25 min. Some worked on their reading and some took AR test. When that was done I went to the front of the classroom and handed out the magazines to the class. Once everyone got their magazines I told them to turn to page 3. This was the first explorer we went over and his name was Christopher Columbus. I choose him because Columbus Day just happened and I think it is important for the students to know why we have this day. Then I told them to turn to page 5 and this explorer was Hernan Cortes one of the most important Spanish explorer. The third explorer we went over was Vasco De Gama this is one of the most under…

I remember the cool breeze of the night that greeted me as I stepped out of the Chicago O'Hare International Airport. My mind was a melting pot of thoughts and emotions, threatening to bubble over as I take in the overwhelming beauty of the city before me. The problem was that the only planning that went into this spontaneous vacation was: "architecture, pizza and gangsters". And I had no idea how or if I could satisfy the hunger for this city that suddenly encased me. But I thought, for now, getting to my hotel, The Talbott (an incredible place and reasonably priced with an amazing view), and finding a few tours wouldn’t hurt.…

The article is 1492: Europe in America and America in Europe: Or, Traveling Metaphors in the Discovery of America by Boris Vejdovsky. This was a very interesting article concerning Columbus and the beginning of our great country. Vejdovsky dives into the reasoning behind Columbus’s exploration of the New World and really tackles the deeper meaning behind why Columbus choose to do what he did. The main argument of this article was whether Columbus choose to adventure and explore out of selfish wants or out of biblical calling. The author presents the two specific choices for describing Columbus, either a faithful zealot or greedy tourist only interested in fame, fortune and acceptance. He describes Columbus two hypothetical ways for the ready…
