Columbus Day Reflection
This week was a short week with Thanksgiving right around the corner. After the kids came into the room and had silent reading for 25 min. Some worked on their reading and some took AR test. He takes their kindness and uses it against them by offering them what he calls “trifling items” for valuables such as baskets of cotton. Since the native people believed that…

Christopher Columbus can in no way, shape, or form be considered a hero. A hero is someone who performs good deeds for the sake of others and not for their own benefit. Christopher Columbus did not do a single good deed in any of his four voyages in the late 1400 's. Christopher Columbus was not the founder of the Americas we live in today because he did not set a single foot on these grounds, even if he did there were already the natives who inhabited the land. When he first sited land it was further down south in the Caribbean Islands. Christopher Columbus can be considered the enforcer of slavery. Slavery was already going on when he left Spain. However, the natives could be used for trade with other goods, this was known as the slave trade. He and his crew basically enslaved a whole race of men, women, and children. When Christopher Columbus discovered what he thought to be the "New World", he had no idea that he would find a whole race of people. After some researching, It has become clear that Columbus Day is actually quite controversial in regards to whether or not he should be celebrated. Firstly, one of the main points I noticed was his instigation and condoning of slave trade. While I certainly agree that this was terrible, it is also true that it was a cultural norm at this time. Additionally, even though Columbus wasn’ the first to discover America, he did help bridge the gap between the old and new world which led to the exchange of cultures, products, etc. This was important for the development and spread of the western civilizations. It is likely that without his brave efforts, the world would not be the place it is today. Overall, while it may not be necessary to deem an…

The Columbian American exchange was a monumental turning point in time and I feel like the idea of this project was better than the actual outcome for my group. Our group contact was very helpful and I like how we were able to spend quite a bit of time making sure we had everything organized. Recording our process and next steps made the whole project move along as smooth as possible. Even though our contract stated that we would do what was assigned and meet deadlines there was a member that consistently missed meetings and failed to complete work outside of class. This member ended up weighing down the group as a whole and made everything more difficult. We were stressed to finish on time without them helping out. The person also did not tell us why they were not contributing at all outside of school and very little inside of school. This was concerning because I’ve worked with them in the past and they are usually very timely and productive.…
