My First Day at College
College life is a life of freedom. I remember my first day at college. I had looked forward to this day from my school days. Life at college meant for me a new life. I was no more a young boy but a young man. When I entered my college for the first day, I looked around with a mixed feeling of confusion and joy. The stately building with massive pillars made a deep impression on my mind. I was puzzled as I was not used to the ‘college-ways’ of things. The students in batches were moving up and down the corridors for their classes. The professors were coming smilingly and exchanging greetings with the students in a friendly manner. The first item on the routine was a lecture on English. I joined my class in room No. 51. It was S.ALIS’s English class, S.ALI being the initials for the professor’s name. The professor came with the attendance register. After finishing roll-call he delivered a short lecture on college-life. What impressed me most was the fluency with which he spoke. He advised us to take the maximum advantage of college-life. Consulting my day’s routine I found that the next period was an off-period. This gave me a chance to make a tour round the college premises. I noted with a sense of relief that I would no longer be confined to the same room for hours together as I used to be at school. The first year of college can be a new and exciting journey for many students. Students can also take on new experiences in their first year of college; it can also come with bumps along the way. As a student he or she must find a way to balance their new life as a college student and their transitions. There will be difficulty transitioning such as adapting to new the new environment, trying to make new friends and difficulty with class work. Adjusting to an environment that you’re not used to can be too much for some students. You have to get used to the new living arrangements and having a roommate. Having a roommate is a great college experience. College brings a great opportunity to meet new people from different cultures and backgrounds. Making new friends can also help to adjust to the new surroundings. A lot of students sometimes become afraid of the first year of college. This may lead to different types of academic difficulties. Some may face test anxiety and trouble concentrating. If a student gets the feeling that the work load is becoming too much, they should meet with their advisor, go to on campus tutoring or join a study group. Mostly all students go through some academic difficulties, but it is important to always stay positive and get the help they need. As a first year student I consider myself a balloon lost in the sky trying to find its way. The reason I say that is because as a first year student I was let off into a place where I was not familiar with anything and I was lost. I was just floating around looking for a place to adapt, somewhere to belong. I’ve never learned anything that was taught to me this semester, I might have witnessed those concepts before but I never physically learned them. For example me being a balloon in the air I’m floating A Semester of Education The fall of my nineteenth year promised to be a long one. For the first time in thirteen years I found myself out of school. I was employed at the same mind numbing job that I had held for the last three years. While most of my friends were back in school after their summer break, I was back at home after a year of living in a college dorm. The transition was not an easy one for me, and I looked upon my semester off with little optimism. The previous fall was one of much more hope and excitement...
