As I think about my childhood I remember many happy memories spending time with my family. My Dad has always been my role model. He spoiled me, taught me right vs. wrong, and provided me with a positive insight about life. Many people say that children will grow up to live life exactly like their parents. Well, for me I've always wanted to grow up to be exactly like my father. But now that I'm grown up and have my own life, it seems like nothing has turned out like I thought it would.
Growing up, my parents always told me that the key to having a successful life was through an education. My father and I have viewed the importance of an education very differently. My dad graduated high school with his diploma at almost the top of his class. Unlike me, who barely completed high school and ended up testing out with my GED. Right after high school, he went to college at Western Washington University, graduating with his Bachelor's degree in Audio Visual and Communications. On the contrary, I joined the military and went into the medical field. I am now almost 24-years-old and going to a community college.
Another point in which my dad's life differs from mine involves money and finances. I would describe my dad's financial situation as well-off or rich verses mine as poor or low-income. He lives in a huge, 4 bedroom house and owns an RV. I live in a small, 2 bedroom apartment and have a dog. My dad owns two vehicles, a big diesel truck and an SUV. Meanwhile, I have a small sedan that is financed. His yearly salary from his self-employed, fast growing company, is easily 100K. However, I work part time as a medical assistant and have a yearly salary of about 30K. He doesn't have to worry about having enough money to pay bills, whereas I do. I live from paycheck to paycheck each month.
Finally, my father's personal life is nothing like my own. My father got married when he was in his 30's and has remained married for almost 20 years. I was married right after high school and got divorced 2 years later. My father has three kids, including myself, but I only have one. He has always been very well known and had a lot of friends throughout his life. However, I have never really been well known by anyone in our town and only had a few very close friends growing up. My father even has more facebook friends than I do!
My family has taught me many different things about how to live my life, especially my father. I've learned from him that life is not about the material objects, like how much money you make or the things you own. Life is about the how you choose to live and the memories you make.
