Which difficulties, if any, did you encounter in making the handouts? How did you overcome them?
Making handouts for the lesson that you will be discussing is not an easy task. You have to consider the availability of the resources and time as well. Good thing if you have the books, the internet and other references. But what if it’s the other way around, it’s another different story. Remember that handouts are more detailed compared to what the teacher is showing in his/her slide presentation. It is not just a mere set of words arranged in an organized manner. It is more of a detailed, thoroughly constructed, comprehensive sets of concepts and ideas sequenced together to guide the students during class discussions.

I have designed individual handout booklets for the learners to use during the session and refer to after the lesson. I want the learners to demonstrate what they have learned. The ideal way would be to get the learners to practice on their own individual computers, to do this I will need a few extra computers which unfortunately do not have. I shall therefore ask my learners to answer a few questions related to the session instead. My teaching delivery is based on lecturing whilst demonstrating my topic by using the computer and smart board to help my learners…

During the teaching, I used open ended questions and questions and answers. I also gave the patient 4 handouts and highlighted the important discussion points and topics I discussed. I estimated that the process would take between 15-30 minutes depending on if the patient and her daughter had any questions. The whole process took about 20 minutes. I believe that the handouts were the best way to achieve my goals. The daughter was very happy that I had them, and was especially appreciative of the pictures that were in the handouts. I began by assessing the patients learning needs, learning deficits, factors affecting learning, and the learning environment. I turned the television down, but the patient would not let me turn it off. After my…

I use gapped handouts so that the students have to follow the progress through the session. The lesson then proceeds with myself advancing the presentation slides and discussing what is on the slides and relating this to real life situation where possible. Throughout the session the students are asked questions to test their knowledge of the topic and build on this with the PowerPoint. If any of the students have a contribution to the discussion they are encouraged to make their point and widen the discussion, as I may not have the only relevant experiences related to the discussion. The students are at all times encouraged to question me on the topic and my experiences, if questions are not being asked it is possible that students may not be grasping the topic under discussion or they are too shy or embarrassed to ask questions in front of the rest of the class. I like to make sure that the point of the discussion has reached everyone by repeating in an alternative manner or directly asking if someone who looks like they are unsure. That way they, usually, they do not feel embarrassed at not understanding the discussion and I can repeat myself to emphasize the point to the benefit of the whole…

Resources can be found, made and developed in a variety of ways. They also exist in numerous forms such as paper and printed material, newspapers and journals, to media based resources such as videos, images and blogs. Another extremely valuable resource available can be the teacher themselves, or other people such as guest speakers and specialists who can all provide comprehensive, primary evidence which can enhance a learners experience more, for example, than a paper resource.…

When using or creating resources, I make sure they encourage fairness of opportunity, reflect diversity and challenge and stereotypes. For example when I prepare text and pictures in handouts (from my organisation’s website) I choose all aspects of culture. Also I select resources to appropriate in terms of levels, quality, quantity, and content as well as be relevant to the subject. In addition I make sure the learning expected, handouts and presentations checked for spelling, grammar, punctuation and sentence construction errors. I always print resources from my organisation’s website, so there will be my organisation details on any documents to explain where they originated. We may also find it useful to add a file name and version number to keep track of any changes. I choose pictures in handouts and presentations which reflect different abilities, ages, cultures, genders and…
