Mr. Shiftlet's Irony
5. Mr. Shiftlet manages to get what he wants by negotiating with Mrs. Crater, knowing what she wants as well. Mr. Shiftlet is a wise man and knew what Mrs. Crater was trying to do, without her directly telling him as it is said on page 1039, “The old woman’s smile was broad and toothless and suggestive. ‘Teach her to say ‘sugarpie,’’ she said. Mr. Shiftlet already knew what was on her mind” (O’ Connor, 1039). This shows that Mrs. Crater isn’t the best at being slick and secretive, therefore it’s easy for Mr. Shiftlet to use what he knows to his advantage.
7. Situational Irony:
“[Mrs. Crater] had never seen Mr. Shiftlet before, she could tell, even from a distance, that he was a tramp and no one to be afraid of” (1034). This is situational irony because in the very beginning Mrs. Crater says Mr. Shiftlet is not one to be afraid of, but by the end of the story, he is a twisted man that fooled her and stole her car.

Shiftlet] was more depressed than ever as he drove on by himself” (1042). As he continued to drive alone, he saw a boy standing on the side and let him in, although the boy did not initiate he wanted a ride. Moments later, the boy lashed out on Mr. Shiftlet yelling, “You go to the devil!” as well as adding, “My old woman is a flea bag and yours is a stinking pole cat!’ and with that he flung the door open and jumped out with his suitcase into the ditch” (1043). This is situational irony because Mr. Shiftlet abandons Lucynell prior, but the boy he picked up abandons him and jumps out the moving

Two types of irony are presented in the short story The Story of an Hour, situational and dramatic irony. Situational irony is irony involving a situation in which actions have an effect that is opposite from what was intended, so that the outcome is contrary to what was expected. Dramatic irony is inherent in speeches or a situation of a drama and is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play or story. Situational irony is expressed through Mrs. Mallard’s actions to her husband’s death in the train accident. When she first heard the news of her husband’s death Mrs. Mallard “wept at once, with sudden, wild abandonment”(188). It appeared to everyone that she was very sad and upset so she went upstairs to her bedroom; although, she was flowing with excitement. It is natural for a person to be very upset after losing a loved one, so they all understood what was happening.…

It all happened on a warm sunny saturday morning in “Where are you going. Where have you been’’ by Joyce Carry Oates. It started with an unfamiliar car bouncing along Connie's long drive way. When she first heard the car she rushed to the window excitedly, frantically fixing her hair. Making sure she looked good, seemed to be an insecure habit for Connie. She saw an uninvited boyish looking man who was situated in the car parked now in her driveway. There was a tension of unease about the boyish man, he acted if he was supposed to be at Connie's house, as if she has told him to come. She should have taken him being there uninvited more seriously, by locking the door or even calling the police. Connie was too caught up with herself to realize…

The fact that Mrs. Mallard had more emotion about gaining freedom from the cuffs of marriage than the death of her husband. The window showing displaying the springtime and pleasant scenery as a symbol of freedom also an ironic event because this was a time for grieving. Lastly the mentioning of her troubled heart. This was ironic because as her sister and husband’s friend thought the news of her husband death would cause stress on her heart but the fact that her husband was still alive, striping her of her independence is really what caused her…

He married a girl and made the mother trust him just so he could get a free car. O’Connor makes Mr.shiftlet so malicious and evil because she wants to show how morally corrupt a person with free will can be. He has no sense of consequence and thinks only about how he can get things for himself. Mr. Shiftlet is also missing an arm and O’connor made him this way because it represents how his physical appearance is just as twisted as his personality. Irony constructs an atmosphere of suspense within O’Connor’s “A Good Man is Hard to Find.” The story follows a family planning a road trip while a convicted killer, a man known as the “Misfit,” has escaped prison. Upon this discovery, the family altered their road trip’s destination to avoid the suspected path of the Misfit. However, as situational irony goes, the family…

In response to the “Lesson in Irony” presented by the author I would have to disagree with his or her opinion. I do not think the author correctly reflects poverty in America. The author is implying that the government program run by the U.S. Department of Agriculture is promoting dependence on their program for people in poverty who are unable to provide meals for the families. To me it comes across that the author is using sarcasm to get their point across rather than looking at the realities of the people receiving these free meals and Food Stamps.…

I think that Mr. Shiftlet is a huge hypocrite. In The Life You Save May Be Your Own, he told Mrs. Crater, "never let anyone take your daughter away" and then he takes her away but also dumps her at a roadside diner, named The Hot Spot. I would expect this to be a not so good place, but it turns out to be a diner. This goes back to Mrs. Crater telling Mr. Shiftlet, "you want you an innocent woman, don't you?" It shows a mix between idea’s with Lucynell being the innocent and not a woman, but a girl being sixteen, and dropping her off at a terribly named diner.…

In Edgar Allan Poe’s 1841 short story of "Never Bet the Devil Your Head,” Edgar Allan Poe begins his tale by describing how he has been under criticism because his tales do not have morals. In response to his critics, who he refers to as "ignoramuses," Edgar Allan Poe writes "Never Bet the Devil Your Head" which is the story of a man who is offering to bet the devil his head that he can do this or that. One day, the narrator (presented as the author himself) is traveling with Toby Dammit and he bets the narrator he can leap over a turnstile in the distance, and bets the devil his head he can clear it. Suddenly, a "little lame old gentleman" appears and urges Toby Dammit to make the jump. Toby Dammit takes the jump, falls backwards, and the old man jumps up to retrieve Toby Dammit’s fallen figure and runs away with something. The narrator finds that Toby Dammit has been beheaded by a metal bar that was right over the turnstile, but his head is nowhere to be found. Have you very been concerned with whether or not you’re making the right decision on a certain situation? (Poe 486-93)…
