A person who has had a significant influence on me in my life would have to be my former foster mother, Miss Barbara Pratt. Ms. Pratt was a foster mother to many children before myself and she had had wonderful success with most of them. I had been in an extremely abusive relatives home before I had been placed in Ms. Pratt’s home. When it was discovered that I was in an abusive home I was first placed in a group home in Cincinnati. Social Services worked very hard to find me a home that would help me adjust to a ‘normal’ life as quickly and easily as possible. They found the home my older sister had been placed in, they contacted Ms. Pratt and I was placed in her care.…

“Being sick won’t change me, son,” he said to me the day he was diagnosed. “I know who I am. I worked every day for years to keep my family happy. I made a lot of mistakes in life but I did a lot of things right too. If I could go back, the only thing I would change would be becoming more diligent about mine and your mothers health. You see, son, you have to own your mistakes not let them own you.” There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t think about that conversation.…

He used to take my cousin and I Nate to the farm everyday and do things with us. It didn’t matter what it was we made things from birdhouses to helping build the garage to cartoon cut outs. I loved it. I still remember the day like it was yesterday that I got the call from my dad on my way back from the mall with my mom asking me to go to little falls hospital. I didn’t know what was really going on so I told my mom to drop me off when I walked in I saw him there laying in the bed and I lost it. I felt so bad for my grandmother. It has to be hard being with someone sense you were 14 and losing them when you’re 72. It was around 1 in the morning and my grandfathers breathing started to slow down again. My dad and I walked in together, I heard the words from my grandmas mouth, I thought I would’ve never heard they were “I’m ready Bill.” As soon as she said that she made us all grab hands while she said a prayer. After the prayer it was the last time I’ve seen my grandfather. Although my grandfather couldn’t speak, he tried. I remember him trying to tell my grandma he loved her. And till this day 3 ½ years later I can’t get that image out of my head no matter how hard I…

In my eyes, Desmond was someone whom I could always reach out to for support. When I moved to Hatfield in the year 2005, he was one of the first people I met. My friend and I had a bond that was unbreakable. We called each other brothers and stuck with one another till his last breath. Desmond died in 2010 from an Oxycontin and heroin overdose. It was a shocking experience to have gone through because I never thought that someone so close to me would die from drugs. I began to recognize that no one is infinite and this type of life-changing event could happen to anyone.…

Horcher, my high school coach. Not only did he influence me to become better in sports he pushed me to become the best I can be, but he also advised me to keep up with my studies and give it my best in that aspect as well. I can still recall, every week when we would stay after school to practice on both my reading and writing at the time I wasn't the best,I knew I needed help and I was determined to give it my all since I knew that I needed a hand so I reached out and he helped. He stated “As long as you keep winning us basketball games and keep up with your grades you’ll go places kid”. Those words are still in my head till this day. As a result, we won many games and won a couple dollars for the school. I can certainly say that I am grateful for this man for showing me the power of not giving up and always trying your best. The determination I acquired is something I will never…
