More Effective Tutoring Session Essay
Successful tutoring occurs in a comfortable and peaceful place. The Academic Support Center’s staff creates an atmosphere of encouragement and a positive learning environment. Tutors have a close interpersonal relationship with the students while working through a difficult academic situation. Students can tell if the tutors care about their success.
The Tutoring session should offer students an opportunity to ask questions and discuss or deliberate information from class. All sessions are unique: tutors have to modify the session’s format. Below is a guide for conducting a tutoring session. This Tutoring Session process has been adapted from Ross MacDonald’s The Master Tutor: A Guidebook for More Effective Tutoring and Arleen Janz’s Essentials

The planning of the lesson is very important for positive learning. It is essential that tutors are aware of the requirements of the awarding body, their own organisation and legal obligations such as health and safety. As a teacher I would have to develop useful assessment techniques. The two main types of assessment would be formative and summative. Cohen L. et al (2004, pp330) suggests that formative assessment provides feedback to teachers and students on the current understanding. This creates a rich learning environment as the teacher and students will know during the lesson where the learner is weak and can improve on and this will result in constructive learning. A summative assessment helps…

For this task, you’ll need to work as part of a pair who can meet for a face-to-face discussion. Your teacher will identify a process for this task that fits your learning situation. For instance, if you’re working primarily on your own in this course with no on-site classmates (self-paced course) the process will be a little different than if you are learning with one or more other students in the same building and on the same schedule (group-paced course). Discussions in those two cases are outlined below.…

Roles, responsibilities and boundaries are continuous qualities within my role as a tutor which are constantly assessed and reflected upon throughout the teaching/training cycle. According to Francis and Gould “The role of a teacher is not just to teach but to also be an evaluator, subject leader, manager of learning resources, curriculum developer, union member, personal tutor, assessor, information and advice giver, administrator, liaison with external body, record keeper, interviewer, verifier, role model and overall to help learners to gain a qualification.” The Teaching/Training cycle supports this theory by providing a structures process in which tutors can follow ensuring that all learners receive the best and consistent approach when teaching any given subject.…

In my opinion being a tutor is more than helping a busy college student complete a homework assignment or studying for an upcoming exam. You can offer much more to someone struggling when you have experienced what they are going through. Many college students hold part-time jobs, take several credits, and get very few hours of sleep which leave them stressed and overwhelmed. When students come to me for tutoring I don’t just complete the assignment and send them on my way. I ask them what they need help with, what their course load is like, how much work they do outside of school and what else they have going on that could be making their education more complicated than it needs to be.…

Seeing how Belmont Hill’s tutoring program works has inspired me to become a peer tutor. Working together with a younger peer on difficult material is a perfect example of academic teamwork at Belmont Hill. Belmont Hill proves how having a tutor is not a bad or embarrassing thing to do, but insteads thinks of it as one of the best move you can make when you are struggling. There are peer tutors for every subject, and they have all already passed the course, so they are very experienced and know what is coming. The case is the same in real life at Belmont Hill and in the book The Boys in the Boat; teamwork makes the dream work. In conclusion, getting extra help should not be an embarrassing thing to do, it should be a responsible move made by a student who is fully devoted to academics at Belmont…

As a teacher/trainer it is your role to plan and carry out clear learning sessions with material that is relevant to the subject. You will need to have the correct resources for each session and to determine the length and content of the sessions in relation to the length of the course. Once this has been planned you will need to decide the best way to implement your teaching by identifying the needs of your learners, your organisation and your own. Sessions may need to be adapted for learners depending on their individual preferred learning styles, motivations, previous educational experiences and any special needs a learner may have. You may need to arrange for initial assessments to be carried out in order to gain an understanding of a learners skills and knowledge along with interviewing learners to gain an insight to any possible barriers or challenges that may affect their learning, and if so come to an agreement with regards a specific learning plan for them. If a learner has any…
