Montblanc vs Faber Castell
It seems no matter how hard I try, I just can not seem to avoid getting into comparing brand name writing instrument companies. It seems almost as though this assignment was truly meant for someone like me. I have been a retail manager for 20 years working mostly in the Dallas Galleria, however also spending time working in California, Colorado, and New York. I have cut my teeth on the writing instrument business working for Montblanc, because of my vast knowledge of this brand I will be comparing Montblanc to another German writing instrument manufacturer with a rich history Faber-Castell. By 1906 the energy and promise of the first few years of the "modern" new century had already had a stimulating effect on inventors and craftsmen. Ingenuity, imagination, and a sense of exploration and discovery helped the fountain pen make its technical and commercial breakthrough as a writing instrument. The first practical fountain pen had been patented as early as 1884, and the revolutionary lever filler was only two years away from introduction. In Hamburg, stationer Claus-Johannes Voss, together with banker Alfred Nehemias, and the Berlin engineer August Eberstein, recognized the “signs of the time,” and decided to produce fountain pens, their joint venture setting the cornerstones for the future internationally successful company, known as Montblanc. In 1906, After a short period of time Wilhelm Dziambor, Christian Lausen and later Claus Johnannas Voss took over the business and thus laid the foundation for the future internationally successful company Montblanc. At first, the small new company was called Simplo Filler Pen Company. The name 'Simplo' was doubtless derived from the word 'simple', which referred to the new pen design with a 'built-in' inkwell. A year later, in 1909, a technically improved fountain pen, "Montblanc," was introduced. The name "Montblanc" was registered as a trademark, and the name used for all writing instruments produced by the company.

We will be comparing two companies; both are strong and have great credibility. Ideally with a solid competitor we want to show differentials and make a solid contrast. In this case we want to compare at least two years of financial data. A great way to exemplify this is to compare Coke to Pepsi. To say which one is better to drink is debatable, but what we are looking at is which is better to invest in. We will analyze the information provided in the appendixes and make a conscience decision as to which company is stronger, therefore a smarter investment choice. After all, I wouldn’t want you to throw your money down the drain.…

    The Printing Press

    • 6 Pages

It is argued that the printing press is one of the most significant inventions of all time ranked alongside the wheel and the plow (Johannes Gutenberg and, 2009). The man credited with its invention is Johannes Gutenberg, born of Mainz, Germany around 1400 (Childress, 2008). Johannes began his work with the printing press around 1430 and developed his first prototype somewhere around the mid-15th century. As with most inventions, Gutenberg’s press had precedents in history, especially in Asia where the Chinese had carved texts into wooden blocks (Johannes Gutenberg and, 2009). In the Netherlands, a man by the name of Laurens Janszoon produced a predecessor by using carved blocks of type that could be cut into letters (Johannes Gutenberg and, 2009). Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press was a result of combining three different technologies already in existence; paper, the winepress, and oil-based ink into a single moveable type (Bantwal, 2011). Rather than using wooden letters, Gutenberg used his metal working background and replaced them with letters made of brass or bronze, he then adapted a version of a wine press where the top was used to align and press the letters against the paper that was then lined up and locked into a frame below (Johannes Gutenberg and, 2009). The first samples of paper arrived from China, and at the time paper was not durable enough for hand copied versions of books, instead vellum a much thicker medium was used (Johannes Gutenberg and, 2009). However, Gutenberg soon found out that the thinner less expensive paper worked very well in his press. Finally, Gutenberg found that the use of oil based ink did not smear like the commonly used egg-based tempera. Merging these technologies into one, Gutenberg made modern printing possible and economical.…
