Mistakes In Thank You, Ma Am By Langston Hughes
Second Chance Everyone makes mistakes, but everyone has the second chance to change in their lives. Langston Hughes has written many enlightening stories to tell us positive attitude and lifestyles. In Hughes' short story, "Thank You, Ma'am ", it talks about a boy named Roger, who attempts to steal Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones's purse but fails. He fears that he can be sent to jail after he gets caught by Mrs. Jones. Instead of ending in jail, he learned a precious lesson from his mistake. This short story illustrates that love and trust can transform a person's life while punishment can only result in fear. Punishing someone due to a mistake cannot forever teach the person a lesson, but rather cause the person fear. Roger is fearful when Mrs. Jones grabs him, and he asks "You gonna …show more content…
Jones. He starts to realize that Mrs. Jones does not judge him, but she understands his situation. When Mrs. Jones tries to cook food for both of them, Roger could have run out of the door, but "he did not want to be mistrusted now." He knows this is the second chance that Mrs. Jones gives him, and he does not want to "loose" it again. He might have lost many things in life, but he wants to hold on the trust that Mrs. Jones has for him. Roger transformed from a boy who steals people’s money to ask “Do you need somebody to go to the store to buy milk?” He changed from “loose” to well-behaved. When they start to eat, she approaches him and tells him to "eat some more, son." By calling him a "son" portrays that Mrs. Jones is willing to forgive him and that he is part of the family. In the end of the story, Roger says “Thank you” shows he learns to be appreciating for what Mrs. Jones has done, and “he never saw her again.” Tells us Roger never does bad things after he walks out Mrs. Jones’s door. Roger starts from a boy who seems to be very loose in life to be transformed to someone who is being loved and

Civilization still has a little bit of control over Roger's mind and sanity. He seems to feel as if he is still surrounded by rules, laws, consequences and adults. Adults are the ones that make the rules and ensure they are enforced. In chapter four "Roger grabbed a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space around Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. Roger's arm was conditioned by a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins." This symbolizes civilization…

In "Roger Malvin's Burial," Hawthorne presents the story of a man who lies to his wife about how he helped her father in his dying days. The young man, Reuben Bourne, and his girlfriend's father, Roger Malvin, have been left wounded by a battle. After journeying for three days, Roger can no longer go on. Despite his request to Reuben that he should go home to his daughter, Dorcas, Reuben refuses and wants to stay by Roger's side until he dies. However, Reuben decides that he can try to save Roger by getting help and, if not, promises that he will return to bury Roger. Instead, Reuben ventures off and rests after the second day, where he plans to await death. Soon, a few travelers come and rescue Reuben and take him to his hometown where he sleeps for a few days. Therefore, Reuben returns home safely while he leaves Roger to die without being buried. This sin of abandoning Roger leads to overwhelming guilt by Reuben, which, in turn, leads to self-destruction and the deaths of Reuben's son Cyrus. Thus, in "Roger Malvin's Burial," Hawthorne demonstrates that sin and guilt leads to dehumanization, as the guilt of not fulfilling his promise to Roger consumes Reuben's life, sending him down a destructive path.…

Next, Roger is a furtive child because in the beginning of the book he was described that way, he was also observing the group of children around. He might be using this information to his advantage, so he can overcome some of the people, hurting them in an emotional and mental ways. In the novel, it stated that “There was a slight, furtive boy whom no one knew, who kept to himself with an inner intensity of avoidance and secrecy.” (Golding Pg.22) The narrator is telling us that Roger is a troubled child that has deep secrets that no one can know about or he’ll get in a great heap of trouble. Things a ten year wouldn’t ever do, even if he had horrible parents. Roger has a deep dark side, because when they just crash landed on an island they should have been interacting with the…

Hi Terrell I love responding to your post they are so interesting. I also agree with what you are saying. I haven’t been a child in a long time, but when I was a child, I thought as a child and I understood as a child. I could read those rhyming witty poems and get pleasure from them. The Life of a Cupcake they put me in the oven to bake. Me a deprived and miserable cake. Feeling the heat I started to bubble. Watching the others I knew I was in trouble. This was cute as a child. But it does nothing for me now at this stage of my understanding. But those poems by Langston Hughes Mother to Son, Dreams and Let America be America Again, some of the best I have ever read. I never thought of myself as being into poetry until I read these poems.…

Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones from the short story “Thank You Ma’am” is a tough yet motherly and empathetic character. These three contradictory character traits show in her actions, thoughts, and words. Mrs. Jones exemplifies empathy when she can relate to Rodger’s situation and when she doesn’t want to ask him about things that could possibly be embarrassing to him. “The woman did not ask the boy anything about where he lived, or his folks, or anything else that would embarrass him.”(3) this shows that Mrs. Jones is motherly as well because she cares about the boy’s feelings and doesn't want to make him uncomfortable. On page one Mrs. Jones says “You ought to be my son. I would teach you right from wrong. Least I can do right now is…

His actions end up really affecting his behavior. For example, when he tries to snatch Mrs. Jones pocketbook, “Instead of taking off full blast as he had hoped, the boy fell on his back onto the sidewalk.” This is Important because when he falls, Mrs. Jones catches him and he could get into trouble. Another instance where his actions cost him is when they are at Mrs. Jones house and she talks about how she could have called the police on him! That probably scared Roger away from stealing by itself because Roger really didn't want to end up in Juvie.…

However, this changes when Jack and the boys pretend to kill Robert. “Robert was screaming and struggling ... Behind him was Roger, fighting to get close.” This quote shows how Roger likes the feeling of power over a victim and likes to hunt. Here we see Roger losing his grip on society’s rules and where his natural instinct takes over. This can also be seen in the quote “Sharpen a stick at both ends”. This shows that evil is starting to take over Roger’s mind from all angles, suggesting that there is no escape for him…

Then, it is very clear that Mrs. Jones has great wisdom. Instead of scolding him for trying to take her purse, she tells him that she is sure he grabbed her purse because he is hungry. This is very wise because it helped Roger to calm down and listen. Even leaving the door open and her purse on the bed shows Roger that Mrs. Jones trusts him to do the right thing. This makes Roger feel that he must honor the trust she is showing in him. We don’t know from the events in the story but it may be the first time anyone has ever trusted Roger. Either way, he responded to the trust in a positive way.…

Although it is unclear the origins of Roger it can be assumed he does not have the best upbringing and experienced little to no restraint, and “research has shown that trauma during childhood can lead to aggressive or even criminal behavior...” (Beller). Even if Roger was mentally healthy he would still have a higher chance to commit crimes based on his presumably unstable backdrop, where he may have been abused or just lacked structure. And, not only does his childhood affect him, the fact he is on an island with no adults pushes him past his sanity’s breaking point. Children need guidance. Roger may have very well gone his entire life without guidance, and when he is thrown into a life or death situation he cannot fall back on his futile teachings, for his has none. Without being shown the right way to live Roger stumbles through life as he knows not right from wrong.…
