Miss America- Heather Whitestone
When she was 5 years old, she began to do ballet lessons. Her mother wanted her to understand that there’s natural rhythm in the voice. The fluctuations of ballet music and movement helped her grasp that. With her talent and extensive training, Heather was good enough to become a professional dancer. But the professional dancer gets meager paychecks and would have to live with her mother. She wanted to be independent. At the next pageant, Miss Jacksonville State University, she was upfront about being deaf. She asked the judges to speak slowly and they accommodated her. She won the 1992 Miss Jacksonville State University title and went on to be 1st runner up to Miss Alabama 1992, Kim Wimmer. The following year she won the Miss Point Mallard competition and once again, placed 1st runner up to Miss Alabama, Kalyn Chapman. After she became Miss America, she showed much dedication to the Deaf Community by serving on the executive board for the President’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. She helped establish a multimedia public service campaign to help identify early hearing loss. She was also a spokesperson for the Helen Keller Eye Research Foundation and the Starkey Hearing Aid Foundation. Now, she is married to a guy named John McCallum. She met him while he was working for the Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich in Washington DC and they didn’t start dating seriously until a month after she gave up her title, and then soon after that they got engaged. They got married on June, 8th, 1996. They have now had two boys and are living in Georgia. I think Heather Whitestone is a great inspiration to the world because she definitely showed everyone that a deaf person can talk, can achieve and is able to do anything. That’s why I admired her so much, because it shows me that any deaf person including me can accomplish

Nancy Kerrigan was assaulted while training for major figure skating competitions, and it was shown that the people closest to Tonya Harding were involved with Kerrigan’s assault. This film explores what happened from Tonya’s point of view and the struggles she had to face mentally, legally, and emotionally. This scandal between Harding and Kerrigan shows that sports can be a beneficial outlet for individuals, but it can also have unfortunate, and even unexpected, downsides when being involved in…

Tracy Turnblad from Hairspray is a beloved character who is not afraid to stand up for what she believes. She is the main character in the story Hairspray, which is about an oversized girl wanting to be on her favorite dance show. While trying to earn her spot, she has to face entitled, traditionally pretty girls who constantly make fun of her size and she has to help beat the oppression of racism because she believes that everyone is equal. This character is different than me because I have never been an “overweight” person before. I do not think that I will ever be very big, so I do not understand what trials she would have to go through in her life.…

When does a person go from a stranger to a best friend? Professor McAdams (1995) has conjured up two imperative levels to distinguish relationships. In the movie Sweet Home Alabama (2002), Melanie Smooter/Carmichael, displays these two imperative levels. Melanie lived a double life from the Civil Wars reenactment daughter to a big city fashion designer. The beautiful, insecure character has her brain all over the place. In her new life she is full of openness, but back home she’s known around town for having high levels of extroversion. The Big Five traits make up the level of dispositional traits with conscientiousness, openness, extraversion, neuroticism, and agreeableness (McAdams, 1995). Level one could be a beginner level or a stranger…

Sandra’s later court decisions against sex discrimination may have had some roots in her own experience: she was unable to find a position in a private law firm, because she was a woman. As Nina Davuluri took her first walk as the new Miss America on Sunday night, audience members and viewers at home showed their true colors. They exclaimed dismay over the crowning of the Indian-American beauty by expressing their views through a social media, especially Twitter. They attacked the former Miss New York through a variety of insults, including using racial slurs and dubbing her “Miss Al Qaeda” (@SHANN_Wow). The main accusation by social media users online is that Davuluri is “not American.” “Shes like not even american and she won miss america” and “this is America. not India” proclaimed the Twitterverse (@kathrynRyan50, @sarawhitton).…

My first choice would have been a movie called Freedom Writers, however, since Brittany has already discussed it I’ll discuss another movie. The movie that is the next most powerful story I know is called “The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life Is Not a Fairy Tale.” Most of you probably have seen it before, if not you probably remember Fantasia Barrino whom was the winner of American Idol: Season 3. When Fantasia Barrino was in high school she was raped, she felt so alone after the attack and thought no one would believe her so she dropped out of school. Now Fantasia was a teenage dropout who had no money, no education and no chance at a real future. At 16, Fantasia found herself in an abusive relationship that left her pregnant and lost. But she refused to give up on her dreams. This movie tells how this inspiring young single mom used her incredible voice to become an American Idol, as well as a Grammy®-nominated, platinum-selling recording artist. This movie was very emotional because when the movie got towards the middle I was crying my eyes out. This movie has made Fantasia Barrino my idol and it had a really huge impact on me because my story is similar to hers so I can relate. The author of this movie had an effect of her audience by the way the movie was interesting from beginning to the end. Another way is because this movie is very encouraging to young women and even some men too. In my narrative next week I would like to write about never giving up on your dreams.…
