Mending Wings Reflection
I attended a youth group at the age 12, and at 16 I was appointed as one of the youth leaders this was mainly volunteer work for a while. Mending wings was a non-profit youth organization that helped Children on the reservation overcome obstacles and hardships we went through on a everyday basis, and to understand that the color of our skin, where your from, and what happened to you in your past does not define you as a person. They were there to show Kids that we can Make better choices then the ones before us and break the cycle of oppression.

During my high school years approximately around my sophomore/ junior year my basketball team including I myself attended the Hoops for Haiti fundraiser that Meredith Elementary school hosted. Hoops for Haiti helps aid the disaster relief fund that is held in Haiti. Hundreds of elementary school children paid $5 each for a chance to play with not only Neumann-Goretti’s women’s basketball team but also the men’s team too. All proceeds were meant to go directly to rebuild and fund schools in Haiti. I decided to talk about this specific service that I participated in because not only was it fun but I got to interact with kids younger than me and was able to put smiles on their faces, those who were there and hopefully those in Haiti knowing that they do have people who care and want to help them out in every way possible.…

In tenth grade, I went on a missions trip with my church to Mink Lake, which is a camp by the Gunflint Trail in northern Minnesota. During the missions trip, we prepared a camp for the summer. Some of my personal jobs were to help clean out two sheds and reorganize them, haul logs, and trim trees all over the camp. The trip benefitted myself and the other people on the missions trip because we were able to help people have a fun experience at camp over the summer, and we also helped the people running the camp to not have to work so hard to prepare the camp for the summer campers. Another reason it was a good experience for all of us workers is because we did not have our cell phones, so we were able to form new relationships with each other since we were not constantly distracted by our…

How I ended up working with the preteens is really almost a coming of age story in and of itself. On Wednesday nights I go to church. For students my age you would normally go upstairs and go to what we call Verge which is like a worship time for seventh through twelfth grade. At the time I did not like to go to Verge and I was not getting anything out of that time. So I would hang out downstairs where the children's and preteen ministries are located. One night I was standing around by the front desk not really doing…

The multicultural Student Leadership Institute(MSLI) is dedicated to helping incoming freshman from diverse backgrounds acclimate to a college environment. The program focuses on three aspects: one, teaching basic college survival skills; two, developing and fostering leadership skills; and three, using leadership skills in the larger community. MSLI teaches students how to use their skills in the community by having students participate in a wide array of community service. As part of the organization, I helped clean up a park; I went to the Trenton Rescue Mission and help with a lot of their programs; and I participated in the Midnight Run, which provides necessities to homeless individuals around the city.…

A leadership experience in which I had a positive influence on the lives of other students was having the opportunity to be chosen as a link crew leader. As a link crew leader, I participated in the organization of freshman orientation and getting assigned a group of freshman to do activities with. On the day of orientation, I received my group of 10 freshmen who seemed nervous and timid of what high school held for them in the future. Incidentally, the director who organized the event introduced a new freshman named Armando to my group who only spoke Spanish. This took me by surprise and I knew it was going to be a challenge having to translate what I was saying without making him feel left out of the rest of the group. He was diffident and…

Junior Honor Society, JHS, and Community Action Program/ Students Against Destructive Decisions, Cap/Sadd are marvelous examples of these. While in JHS I have volunteered for working at the science fair, family fun night, tutoring younger kids, collecting breakfast passes, and collecting money for causes such as, the Connellsville flood. Likewise, Cap/Sadd has also opened me up to more opportunities to volunteer for wonderful causes. Events such as walks to raise money for parks, DUI awareness, drug awareness and other events such as the YIMS drug symposium are all great affairs I personally have volunteered at through Cap/Sadd. As a teen I participated in community service work. It was one of the best learning experiences I ever had. I learned the importance of hard work and helping those less fortunate than me. I am not the only one who has benefitted from volunteer work according to John Frank in his article "The Benefits of Community Service for Teenagers." Frank writes about the many benefits of volunteer work teens can expect to have, and my experiences with volunteer work show me that Frank is right.…
