Maus A Survivor's Tale Analysis
Age is Not Just a Number For the first time ever multiple generations are working hand in hand. Of these, two generations are traditionalist and baby boomers. Each generation has its own ideals, conflicting ideals. These differing ideals in turn create a generation gap, causing conflict in families, schools, and in the workplace. The most visible form of generation gaps exists within families. “So finish at least what’s on your plate” (Spiegelman 43). In Maus: A Survivors Tale, Vladek forces Art to finish everything on his plate. This is due to the experiences Vladek has had of starvation and the lack food molding his ideology on wasting food. “A year taken when it came MY turn, father wanted to make me do the same thing” (45). Generation gaps not only existed between Vladek and Art, but also Vladek and his father. Vladek’s father wishes for Vladek to starve and become too weak to get drafted into the military and Vladek disagrees with his ways. Generation gaps not only exist between baby boomers and traditionalists, but also generation prior to those. The communication within families …show more content…
For instance in Cox and Forkums cartoon, “What does D-Day mean to you?” (Cox), is written on the chalk board by a guest speaker who is a veteran. Multiple children respond in many different ways. “Droid Day”, replies a student, a Star Wars fanatic. The student wearing a Darth Vader mask misinterprets the meaning of D-Day. Another student replies by saying, “Dominos day”. This student is shown as an overweight adolescent immediately ponders about food. This shows the vast communication gap between the veteran and the students who fail to comprehend the gravity of his question. In actuality the veteran is referring the Dooms Day which took place in Normandy during World War II and turned the tides in favor of the Allies. More specifically, it is used to describe the differences in actions, beliefs and tastes between the younger generations in comparison to the older generations.
