At times, it seemed as if my mind was immersed in the book. Reading became a daily habit, and if I did not read anything that day, I would not feel completed. When I was young Maurice Sendak was my favorite author. His books were filled with imagination and ionic characters. The imagination he portrayed in his stories was entertaining. Moreover, I enjoyed reading his story “Where the Wild Things Are” because it was an appealing story when I was younger due to the ability to imagine the characters actions, and the wild adventures made the story a fun reading experience. However, as I have gotten older, I now enjoy mystery books and poetry. “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel is currently my favorite book, and I also love reading more of his …show more content…

“A book is a gift you can open again and again,” wrote Garrison Keillor. People read all the time. They read for information, for escape, for entertainment, for instruction, for guidance. They read recipes and tweets and texts. They read newspapers, blogs, and Facebook replies. In a recent survey by Pew Research, the number of people who actually read a book in the past year was 72 percent in 2015. I am one of those. As I consider my reading experiences, I realize they represent the journey I have traveled, leading me to my current academic path.…

I used to love reading. In kinder and first, my nose was stuck in a Magic Tree House book. Third, fourth, and fifth grade I basically lived at Hogwarts (in my rightfully sorted house, of course, I am a proud Hufflepuff). And in middle school, I discovered THE tween series of my generation, Maximum Ride. Reading was exciting, and even though I had done it for years every time I picked up a book it felt so novel. I was your ordinary bookworm until seventh grade when the joint power of Ms. Green’s teaching and James Patterson’s writing broke my will to read.…

At the beginning of the semester, Dr. Anita Williams offered us the opportunity to expand our knowledge of what does literacy means to us. I wrote my first impression of what does literacy means to me in my essay literacy narrative essay (Literacy in Languages). When I heard the word literacy in our first class, I always thought that it means only the ability of reading and writing as Merriam-Webster Dictionary defined Literacy as “the ability to read and write”. On the other hand, Dr. William helped me to expand my horizons of what is the real meaning of literacy during the semester after reading the articles and watching the videos. After reading Malcolm X’s article, it opened my eyes of what is literacy means to him and many people who were illiterate. Malcolm X explained…

In our society today, literacy is no longer defined as being able to read and write very little just to get by, but it is being able to read, write, and comprehend the information presented to you which you can use in order to be a functional and efficient member of society. Even in one of the wealthiest, most technologically advanced countries in the world, literacy is still a matter of concern in modern day America. It is alarming to know that 1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read and approximately 35 million adults read below the level needed to function in society, many of whom cannot read at all (Kozol 248, "11 Facts About Literacy in America."). How is this even possible? What problems can undereducation and illiteracy bring? Who does this issue really affect?…

I’ve never had a passion for reading. I was never surrounded by peers or family that influenced to me read. I always preferred to watch a movie filled with lies than read a book that would greatly impact my life. Now realizing how important reading is I’m stuck in the back playing catch up, which I highly dislike, especially as a freshman student. In English 101 I’m prepared to force myself to read, magazines, newspapers, novel and especially poems. I’ll love to understand when other say “I love reading because, allows me to go places I've never been, experience new things, explore possibilities and learn something new.” I’m into fiction books I like knowing I can fly on the back of a dragon, turn my boyfriend into a toad, marry a prince, save a kingdom, cast a spell, swing a sword and talk to the gods. Just crazy things that never actually happens in reality. Loving reading makes everything possible, dreams come true, your imagination takes flight and your problems fade as you take on the problems of those you are reading about.…

Literacy is the ability to read and write and is essential to learning any kind of information. It can not be taught and is much more than simply reading a book or writing words down on a page. Literacy is so diverse and unique to the individual that it is always being influenced by new situations or people you come across throughout life. Identifying the source of your literacy is easier said than done, but the simplest way is to identify your "sponsors". Sponsors is a term coined by Deborah Brandt, in "sponsors of literacy", to mean people or situations in your life that affected and developed your literacy, “Sponsors seemed a fitting term for the figures who turned up most typically in people’s memories of literacy learning” (Brandt, 1998). Personally, most of my "sponsors" were situations that happened at school. Throughout this essay I will be talking about how my literacy has been influenced, and developed, throughout my life.…

Like most kids, this is the introduction to writing and reading in one’s life. Here we learn the basics. A book, what we thought were just drawings and symbols on paper turned out to be letters and words on paper and all around us. We learned that words have meanings and that he more we understood the more likely we would be able to get what we wanted. Unlike most kids though, I also learned to succeed by reading in writing in 5th grade. When one is taken out of their natural environment one must adapt to overcome. That is what I learned, most importantly that is why I learned to read and write in a completely different language in just one year. Literacy in my opinion is much like Darwin’s natural selection theory, only the ones who adapt survive and succeed. Only the ones who read, write, and understand efficiently can become powerful and…
