Materials Handling

Belt, chain and screw conveyors and bucket elevators. Vertical and horizontal conveying by a variety of methods. Conveyor selection depends on material and application. Options include fugitive dust containment, multiple inlet and discharge points, variable speed conveying, product weighing and tramp metal separation.

1.1 Definition:
Materials handling is the movement, protection, storage and control of materials and products throughout the process of their manufacture and distribution, consumption and disposal.
Material handling basically, consists of determining "how a product should be moved from one place to another, within the shortest allowable period of time, for the least cost and with the least amount of manual effort".
Three things are very important to materials handling:
Right quantity
Right Place
Right Time
It can be said that there are three basic characteristics of materials handling:
1. Picking up the load
2. Transporting the load
3. Setting the load down
Materials handling activities can be broadly classified into two groups as below:
(a) Plant movement: Materials are moved from one point to another within factory. Materials are received in the factory, stored and later moved to the first operation and through succeeding operations until the product is completed, packed and shipped.
(b) Processing: Certain process such as painting, drying, baking etc are performed as material moves through the process.
In addition to the above-mentioned groups, the material handling will also cover the areas that are outside the factory or plant (Examples are raw materials, transportation and finished goods shipping) 1.2 Types of Materials Handling:
Materials handling is normally split into two main categories:
1. Bulk handling: Bulk materials handling deals with the movement of materials in bulk, e.g. coal, grain,
