Martin Luther King Similarities
Martin Luther King Jr. Martin’s beliefs included the importance of civil rights, specifically on the impact of racial-related topics. He viewed people based on their character and personality, rather than the color of their skin. He also tried to put an end to racism by using nonviolent campaigns. The beliefs of Transcendental philosophy include individualism (meaning to see people as being individuals and believing in the purity of people), idealism (meaning to focus on the importance of creativity and imagination rather than fact or knowledge), and divinity of nature (rather than believing in known religious figures, they believe in more of a spiritual way as in the nature being their religion or “God”). Martin's family was middle class. He followed in his grandfather's and Martin’s father's footsteps by becoming a minister. His birth name was Michael Luther King Jr., but he changed his name to Martin. Martin Luther had many jobs throughout his lifetime. These include minister, writer, orator, civil rights activist, and philosopher. He led a civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until 1968. He was also a huge part of ending the discrimination against African Americans. The period that Martin lived in could have influenced his beliefs because, starting from his childhood, Martin experienced racism. The parents of a white friend of his had said that Martin’s friend and Martin could no longer be friends due to Martin’s skin color. Martin had a suicide attempt at age 12 after his grandmother passed away. He met his wife in Boston, and they got married in 1953. They had four children together. Martin then led a group about being treated equally and never gave up on leading this group even after it threatened his safety.
