1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
I’m an undergraduate student majoring in economy prepared the marketing plan for the purpose of learning and experience.
A strategic plan for PepsiCo North America is hereby proposed as follows for the geographical region of the national United States for the Pepsi Soda Product promotion to consumers between the ages of 12 through 18 years of age. It will utilize a pull strategy through the distribution channels to stimulate demand for the Pepsi carbonated soft drink to the end users as defined to maintain Pepsi’s younger generation of consumers over the next two decades. The strategic plan will consist of a strategic alliance with The Walt Disney Company coupled with a pop star endorsement by Hannah Montana and Kanye West with multiple promotion communication channels and strategies over the next two (2) years. The primary competitor, Coca-Cola, has been entrenched in the North American beverage market and is most commonly consumed by older generations. As such, Pepsi has been typically been targeted to a younger audience. As the ‘Pepsi Generation’ ages, PepsiCo North America should take proactive marketing action into the younger audiences to maintain the younger generations of soft drink consumption for decades to come.

    Pepsi like many companies needs to grow to continue to make money. This is a broad statement and works the same for every business operating in any market. Pepsi has recognized this need and has come up with a few initiatives to make this happen. Pepsi decided that the best way to make their company stronger was to build up their current brands and make their distribution practices more streamline and economic. Pepsi has dedicated more than $500 million dollars for this purpose and plans to continue to report positive growth because of this initiative.     PepsiCo has world renown brand name, a reputation for solid brands and a deep and wide product line in the international and domestic markets. (Simon & Sullivan, 1993). With revenue of more than $66.5 billion, PepsiCo is a world-wide leader in the beverage industry (Bryson York, 2012; Watling, 1992).     According to Exhibit 5, from 1985-1989, Orange crushes’ market share decreased from 22% (1985) to 8% (1989), this data shows that prior to the entrance of Coca Cola’s Slice and Pepsi’s Minute Maid, Orange Crush had more of the market share which at the time, they were positioned toward groups between the ages of 13-40. Since 1985, Crush repositioned itself to target individuals between the ages of 12-17. Appendix D shows that Pepsi Co. and Minute Maid entered the market with their own orange soda brands capturing a large portion of the orange soda market. These new juggernaut competitors reduced Crush’s market share consistently each year by positioning themselves in the 15-30 year old market. Initially, we thought it would be wise for Crush to revert back to its’ original target market, however with the emergence of Pepsi Co.’s Slice and Coca Cola’s Minute Maid into the market, and the fact that both brands are targeting individuals roughly between the ages of 15-30 (Crushes’ previous target market) (Exhibit 8), we believe it would be best for Crush to make an adjustment to their current positioning strategy. Shifting from their current age range (teens 12-17)(Exhibit 13) to younger children between the ages of 6-16 would tap into a market segment not currently being pursued by the new dominant Orange Soda companies.     For more than a century, Coca Cola and PepsiCo have been the major competitors within the soft drink market. By employing various advertising tactics, strategies such as blind taste tests, and reward initiatives for the consumer, they have grown to become oligopolistic rivals.     PepsiCo, Inc. is currently operating in China. It has been in the country since 1982, when it started its first operation in Shenzhen and later established 30 joint ventures all over the country. Recently CEO Indra K. Nooyi said that China “represents our single biggest opportunity today outside the U.S.” (Einhorn & Balfour, 2009 September 28). Recently PepsiCo is stepping up its investments and interests in the emerging market of China. With 1.34 billion people and a Chinese soft drinks market forecasted to have a $40 billion value by 2014, it’s easy to see why PepsiCo is investing in this country now. With government plans to improve the infrastructure, distribution will further improve as well, making it easier to get Pepsi to the Chinese consumers. According to Datamonitor, the company announced in 2008 that it would invest $1 billion in China over the next four years to tap the potential of this growing market (2010 May 14a). This investment would help expand its business and broaden its product portfolio. And according to an article in Advertising Age in 2008, CEO Nooyi said that this was the company’s largest investment in China in the almost 30 years they have been conducting business there. The investment is consistent with their broader global strategy of investing in high-growth developing markets and they want to sell to China’s fast-growing middle class. The money will go towards bigger manufacturing capacity, R&D, and building Pepsi’s sales force in order to broaden product distribution (Madden, 2008 November 10). But that wasn’t the only recent investment.
