Color guard is the visual and the non musical part of a marching band show. Color guard consists of spinning either a three and one half pound rifle or a five and one half foot flag outside, striving for perfection and consistency. The season starts in the summer and is continued through the fall (football season). The enduring practices and heat makes it difficult for some people to give it their all, but at the same time it also helps you to push yourself. If someone does not wish to commit or be the best that they can, they will not survive in marching band color guard. During marching competition the color guard performs the show that they performed during the season and the guard gets judged based on their performance with the band. I am writing concerning Tripp Moore, whom I have come to know throughout my years as the Flomaton High School “Hurricane” Marching Band drumline instructor. As Tripp’s instructor, it was a pleasure to get to know him. Tripp has been a great student of mine and it has been my pleasure of being able to teach him. If I am not at school, I usually am either at band practice, exercising, or working. During marching band season, band takes up the vast majority of my time and it takes up even more due to the fact that I am part of the drumline. Our school has the drumline participate in various events around the school causing me to dedicate even more time to band. Once marching band season ends and concert season begins, I begin to dedicate more time towards working and less time towards band. This makes it so that throughout the majority of the school year I do not have much leisure time at all. However every day I do some form of exercising, either running or lifting weights. Tennis and marching band are two extracurricular activities that require both dedication and commitment. Prior to entering my first year of high school, I decided that I wanted to take my love for tennis to the next level and make the O’Fallon high school tennis team. In 5th grade, I committed myself to playing the alto saxophone in the school band and all that entails with lessons and practice, with an eye on playing in the high school marching band. During high school, I made a commitment to participate in the Rose Bowl Parade in California. After making that decision, I found out I made the tennis team. Practicing both these activities in the summer and playing during the fall semester put me at odds with my parents on what should come first tennis or band. The amount of time needed for both activities to succeed was monumental and would be an uphill battle compared to the actual time I had. This caused internal conflict knowing that one will not get as much attention as the other. At that moment, I decided to come up with a solution to my problem then put it into action. In the army there are many uniforms a soldier has to wear. This is for the different activities a soldier does. For everything from their daily Physical Training (PT), their regular working uniform Army Combat Uniform (ACU), or their dress uniform either the Army Service Uniform (ASU), or the Army Green Service Uniform (Class A). Each uniform is design to fit a specific task and to be worn a in certain way. A great resource for either the ASU or the Class A is the “U.S. ARMY UNIFORM GUIDE.” I found this little book a great resource because it shows every form of the ASU for both males and females soldiers, for officers and enlisted. The way I would describe it would fluctuate and reform throughout the six years I would be in the program. At first, I wasn’t sure what the purpose of swinging flags and running around a tarp was. Slowly, I began to realize how it fit together, how the movement flowed, how the team connected with each other, how our choreography reflected emotion, and how I could communicate and connect with an audience. My understanding soon became complete, as I realized that colorguard is the utilization of equipment (flags, rifles, and sabres) and dance to portray through emotional attachment and performance the deeper meaning of music.
