INTRODUCTION
What is management style?
Management style refers to the way a superior exerts control, implements decisions, motivates and relates with his subordinate. It can be viewed as the type of relationship that subsists between superior and subordinates.
Although, there are a number of leadership styles, there are three major leadership styles:
• Autocratic or authoritarian;
• Participative or democratic;
• Delegative or laissez-fairre;
Some institutions employ a single management style, while others employ different styles. The style employed should be contingent upon the situation at hand. All necessary factors should be taking into consideration such as: the level of skill; the time-frame for the achievement of an objective, etc.
Nigeria is a country with a variety of cultures. Nigeria, being a very cultural nature means that most western management styles are non-applicable.
We can view the management style in Nigeria from two perspectives:
• Management style of the Nigerian Government
• Management style in the Nigerian Business Environment
We would be talking briefly about the major styles of management and their features in the ensuing chapters in order to shed more light on the topic.
