Evolution of Management

After watching the video “Evolution of Management” one will know that there are four major approaches and time periods. The first one starts in the late 1800’s which is known has the classical approach. Next, it is the behavioral approach which started in the early 1900’s. Then in the 1930’s and 1940’s we moved into the systems approach. Now we are currently in the contingency approach, which first started in the 1960’s. In this paper we will discuss each approach and which one I feel is the most important. First, we will start with the classical approach. It would be a type of management that the manager would be the head of a formal hierarchy, kind of like a dictator. This approach mostly focuses on performing tasks efficiently, so that they get the best results. This approach was also broken down into scientific and administrative management. The scientific part focuses on improving efficiency through studies and experiments. Administrative focuses on working as a team, instead of each to our own. These two parts create the foundation for management as we know it today. Next, was the behavior approach which started in the early 1900’s. This part focuses on understanding the needs and wants of people in a company. By knowing how people deal with different things and different types of people, we can create different ways to manage each individual. I know I like challenging myself so I can learn new things, but some people want to be showed step by step on how to do something. By finding out about different behaviors we are able to adapt to new situations. Then in the 1930’s and 1940’s we moved into the systems approach. This style believes that each company runs like a set of interrelated parts to achieve one goal. I would believe that each person does their part, you can achieve, if one person starts slacking off, most likely you will not reach the same standard. By keeping each person motivated you will

The global recession began shortly after the September 2011 crisis, and quickly claimed many victims to unemployment. This financial and economic crisis triggered output contractions in almost all industrialized economies in the year 2009. As businesses cut production in response to lower demands, workers were let go in large numbers, increasing the unemployment rates dramatically. Aside from job losses the quality of employment also deteriorated. Many employees who did not lose their jobs were forced to work above the level previously expected at the same or lower pay. The increase in job insecurity due to the recession resulted in employers having the upper hand, while employees were subject to deteriorating working conditions; however fear of job loss created an environment where employees did not defend their rights. Many organizations were forced to lay off employees due to the economic downturn, however despite economic times many individual business decisions were made that can explain the deterioration of the workplace aside from the necessity of layoffs. While the economy struggled there still were seen large leaps in the finances of large organizations due to the reduction of labor costs rather than rise in production. Some businesses have chosen profit over people; in a time where jobs are tight the organizations are taking advantage of individuals willing to put in extra labor in order to keep a job, therefore reducing employee numbers without reducing production levels.…

Setting performance standards is the first thing that Lei needs to do. She needs to set up a meeting with the employees and talk about the company rules and regulations and what is expected from each employee. Lei should also talk about setting company goals and employee performance. The policy and procedures should then be reviewed by everyone in the company. Also the employee handbook should be given to everyone so that they know what is expected of them. Lei should also talk about company performance and find ways eliminate employees from reporting time not worked and create a work schedule that will work for everyone. When it comes to measuring performance, Lei should come up with a plan to measure employee performance either by personal observation or written reports. I think that Lei would have to start observing the workers to make sure they are doing their jobs and then make up a written reports, hand to employees on a weekly basis so that they can see how their performance measures and what needs to be correct. Also awarding them for good work would increase leadership visibility. Lei will need to compare performance against the standards and determining deviations. She should compare the work accomplished against the expected work. She should also make it a point to compare the customer complaints to see if there are any deviations occurring now that did not happen before. Lei will also need to take corrective Action and by implementing the bureaucratic control system, she can now take the final step to ensure that operations are adjusted to achieve results, or if significant variances are discovered than Lei can take immediate action vigorous action.…

Management has been studied by a lot of theorists who then learning from their own experiences came out with different theories and styles of management, explaining how to manage. The classical school has proven to be one of the most influential of all the schools. (Brooks 2009). Due to the success of the bureaucratic and scientific management style of managing, this essay will look into the bureaucratic style of management and then the scientific style of management and show that although these theories were developed during the turn of the twentieth century, they are still present in organisations today and are still very relevant to this day and age.…

In chapter one of Management, The New Competitive Landscape, 6E, it quotes Peter Drucker as saying, "Management means, in the last analysis, the substitution of thought for brawn and muscle, of knowledge for folklore and tradition, and of cooperation for force." Managing a company takes hard work and dedication to the company and to the employees which depend upon their superior's skills. Reaching that level in an organization requires education of the company and education regarding various departments. Management is the use and control of people or employees to efficiently and effectively accomplish a goal or task. There are several different management styles that a manager can utilize. Also, there are many effective management tools that a manager should use to effectively accomplish a task. Namely, managers should utilize the four functions of management. These functions include planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Without these functions accomplishing tasks would seem unachievable and the organization its self would be disorganized. Therefore, it is very important to have someone in charge to utilize control mechanisms; which is another important step in the functions of management. Also someone needs to keep employees focused and on task. Management is made up of a person or multiple persons that have knowledge of all departments and the goals of each department. They then take that…
