Being ranked No. 1 of “most influential Chinese business leaders” by Fortune China in three consecutive years from 2011 to 2013, Zhengfei Ren, the founder, controlling shareholder and CEO of Huawei is almost regarded as hero of the company.1 He has been the man who is influencing and inspiring the whole company since it was founded in 1987. Now, Huawei is a global leading company in ICT (information and communication technology) solution with revenue in 2012 more than 35 billion dollars.2 The magic rise of Huawei is largely attributed to the family based strongman culture with strong executive force from the top and ability to make long-term planning, but, as far as I can see, will hardly ensure future success.…

I am proposing a plan for an Information Technology personnel expansion to Acorda Therapeutics, Inc. versus a specific Information Technology system to be implemented companywide. Acorda has good information technology systems in place throughout the areas that directly impact the field sales organization. However, Acorda does not have enough personnel within its IT department to support all of the areas within the company that are in need. This has been more evident and is especially true since Acorda doubled the outside field sales team from fifty sales representatives to 100 sales representatives. I would like to outline a plan to triple the head count within our IT department from three to ten employees. From my perspective, as an employee of the company, Acorda has a large gap between business personnel and IT personnel.…

Perhaps Huawei’s most significant sustainable advantage stems from the fact that it consciously chose to develop its technology in house rather than by the more popular and government encouraged way of joint ventures with foreign partners. Huawei learnt basic products through reverse engineering, using that foundation to attempt more complex products that did not exist from Chinese domestic companies. While Huawei could easily have acquired more advanced technological knowledge by partnering, Ren was convinced that this would have been an obvious paradox: to compete in the international market, Chinese companies often partnered with them in the hope of acquiring advanced technologies and capabilities. As this is not in the long-term interests of foreign companies, they tended to bring older generation technology or insignificant components into the joint ventures. Thus, Chinese companies would not only miss the technology they were after, but they would also lose market shares to their stronger competitors. Huawei was able to leverage its advantage of an easy access to a great number of highly educated and cheap engineers, so that even during the company’ early years it had a high ratio of R&D staff to other employees: 500:200.…

By helping us to stay in budget and to adopt a system that could grow in line with company requirements, Huawei really delivered.” Federico Vecchiatti, Head of IT, Unicomm “Before they started the SAP HANA project, Unicomm had been reassured by their dealings with Huawei in the switching project. They had a similarly successful relationship during the SAP HANA project. Their budget was met, their system requirements were met, their investment was future proofed and they developed a partner for the long term.” Stefano Berrettini, Key Account Manager, FastWeb “These projects were great collaborations between partners that understood the customer’s needs and delivered. Huawei’s approach was key to this success. They made the most of the proof of concept process to let the customer trial the system and become comfortable with its reliability and flexibility.” Fabio Zambon, Data Center & Innovation Business Unit Manager, SAIV…
