NATURE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF MANAGEMENT
1. Meaning/Concept of Management:
Management is the process of getting things done with the aim of achieving goals effectively and efficiently.
▪▪ Process: refers to the primary function like planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling performed by the management to get things done.
▪▪ Effectiveness: means completing the right task to achieve the deputed goal within the time frame.
▪▪ Efficiency: means completion of task using minimum resources
2. Definition of Management:
“Management is the process of working with and through others to effectively achieve the organisational objectives by efficiently using limited resources in the changing environment.” Kreitner
3. Features of management
1. Goal oriented – Management processes at every stage aim at achieving the Organisational goal as its fundamental objective.
2. Group activity - It unties the efforts of different individuals in an organisation towards achievement of a common goal.
3. Intangible force - It is a force that cannot be seen or heard but can be felt.
4. All pervasive-This function is applied necessarily at every organisation, every level irrespective of its size and purpose.
5. Multidimensional - Being a sequential set of activities It binds the 5 M’s (men, material, money, machine and method)together. However, the Three main dimensions are-
Management of Work: Every organisation exists to perform work
Management of People: Management is all about getting work done through people and achieving the organisational goal/objectives. It implies dealing with diverse needs of the employees, and individuals as a group of people.
Management of Operations: An organization has to provide some service or product which entails production process having an input, transformation and output.
6. Continuous process - It comprises of series of interdependent, interconnected

    Your board of directors wants to know: How should Cisco grow? Your response was, “Well, the way we’ve grown in the past is. . . .” “No. That’s not the question. Looking backward is easy. How should we grow in the future? Should we build or buy?” And with the next board meeting in only 3 months, you don’t have much time to come up with the answer. Cisco started in 1984 as the plumbers of the Internet by making the switches and routers that direct data traffic over corporate networks and then later, the Internet. Its products weren’t sexy, but every company with an expanding network needed them. So Cisco became the fastest-growing and most valuable company in the world (on the basis of its stock price and total market capitalization). That is, until the technology crash of 2001, which resulted in a $2.5 billion charge for unsold inventory and a stock price that dropped by 83 percent. However, by laying off 10,000 employees, redesigning routers and switches to have fewer and more interchangeable parts, and reducing its fifty product lines to forty, Cisco cut expenses 17 percent and became profitable again. Nearly a decade later, things are much different. Cisco’s revenues are six times larger than the combined revenues of its top eleven competitors. Cisco has nearly 60,000 employees who work in 450 offices in 96 countries. And, the company pulls in $40 billion a year in revenue, three-quarters of which comes from routers and switches (i.e., “plumbing”) with 65 percent gross profit margins. But as you and your board know from experience, there’s no guarantee that this success will last, especially in high-tech, where competitors catch up with and replace the leading firms in their industries on a regular basis.…

    With a small year-round population, Branson, Missouri, is in a location not easily accessible by air service. The city, best known for its country music and music variety shows and family-style attractions, also has the kinds of outdoor activities that attracted more than 8 million visitors last year, “earning it the unofficial nickname ‘Vegas without the gambling.’” About 95 percent of those visitors come by car or bus. But now there’s a new show in town—the Branson Airport. The $155 million airport, which opened in May 2009, is an experiment that many people are watching. The airport is generating interest from city governments and the travel industry because it’s the nation’s first commercial airport built and operated as a private, for-profit business with absolutely no government funding. As one expert said, “...unpretentious little Branson Airport could have an outsize effect it if works. It could turn what now is a mostly regional tourist spot into a national destination for tourists.” Steve Peet, the airport’s chief executive, admits that he had no idea where Branson was in 2000. But by 2004, he was convinced there was money to be made flying tourists there. He says, “If you were ever going to think about building a private commercial airport, this would be the place to do it. How many more visitors would come here if we made it easier and affordable for them? It seemed like an incredible opportunity.” So, using private financing, he decided to build a new commercial airport a short distance south of Branson’s popular music shows district. Both Peet and Jeff Bourk, executive director of the airport, continue to tackle the managerial challenges of turning that dream into reality.
