Major Decision-Making Settings
However, in recent years there has been several ominous long-term trends to contextually examine in relation to major decision-making settings, especially those regarding career choices and complementary education requirements.

For the first time of American history the expectation of increasing standards of living from generation to generation has reversed course.

And while horrendous political decisions have unquestionably contributed to many economic situations by burdening the citizenry with massive debt and a host of unsustainable social programs, a person must comprehend the difference in political reality and an individual’s reality.

When this theory was developed, it was not unheard of for young adults to wait to decide on their career future until closer to adulthood or focus on careers the family had chosen for them. Today, adolescents are being encouraged to consider their futures at a much younger age. For example, in middle school students are encouraged to research their intended careers, thus putting them into a crisis much sooner. This could also allow for more uncertainty in the older adolescents and emerging adults. By finding their career earlier, they may feel that they must be committed to the field and thus once they reach adulthood and start entering the field they may find that they are not suited to the field and must go through diffusion again until they reach a conclusion of what they are suited…

With the advances in medical technologies, people are able to live much longer than they did 100 years ago. Also, most people do not have to engage in hard labor in order to put food on the table. Years ago, most people had their own farms and provided their own food. Now grocery stores are on every corner, and bad harvest seasons no longer prevent families from getting a nutritional meal. Public assistance programs have also helped the quality of life. Now people who are not fortunate to receive high paying jobs can qualify for unemployment and food benefits. The average family of 3 can receive up to $200 to help with the cost of food. With these programs, less Americans are going to sleep without a meal. Also with public education, not only are children educated for free, but those that qualify can receive free meals at schools. It is so much easier to live the American dream. Now one can start at the bottom and work themselves to the top with a proper education. As long as a person has an education, the possibilities are endless. In the 1940’s it was all too common for children to drop out of grade school to help their parents on the farm. Now the high school graduation rates are on the rise. The drop out rate from high school dropped from 14% in 1980 to merely 8% by 2009. http://nces.ed.gov/programs/coe/indicator_scr.asp. The keystone to the American dream has always been the certainty that the next generation can do better economically than their parents. Americans pride themselves with the understanding that through hard work they can do better than those before them, but this may no longer be true. Climbing the economic and social ladder in the United States is becoming increasingly difficult and the middle class is shrinking. The decline of the middle class population in the United States can be attributed to an unfortunate cocktail of several factors. Among these factors are wage stagnation, tax policies more beneficial to the wealthy, the rise of the “gig economy,” the decline of unions, and globalization.…

Many Americans believe that we live in a society that allows everyone the same opportunity for success. This however, is not the case. According to the article and many studies, this opportunity is decreasing and if nothing is done, the very ideals on which our country stands could no longer exist. Income inequality is growing and there are less chances for social advancement, especially for those who are in the lower classes. The United States is running the risk of turning into class-bases society, similar to those seen in Europe.…

Instead of moving up in society today most families are realizing that they are starting to fall backwards on the "class latter." This is also true in other countries such as Cuba where Fidel Castro took control in 1959 with his military might and created "a period of perennial degeneracy for the Cuban people." Now we all know that the kinds of political problems we face here in the United States is no ware near that of second and third world countries but "we tend to have some problems of our own which are beginning to rip apart the very fabric of this nation."…

A person has this style if they have a low tolerance for ambiguity and are efficient, rational, and logical in their way of thinking. They focus on the short term and are quick to make decisions, usually resulting in a decision that has been made with minimal information and not carefully analyzing other alternatives. Example: When a manager spots the dirt on the window, and orders the cleaner to clean the window now, that is a directive style decision-making. The cleaner has to follow the instruction, and does not need to ask for clarification.…
