3. My shrimp is a blend of brown, black and gray.
4. The shrimp would use sand or basic-colored plants to camouflage.
5. My shrimp has two antennae, five pairs of jointed walking legs, five pairs of swimming legs, and three pairs of maxillae. It has 15 appendages.
6. The pleopods are used for swimming.
7. The maxillae are used for feeding.
8. The antennae and antennules are used as feelers and also used to map the shrimp’s environment.
9. The bristles are used to gather food. They can also be used to detect movement around them.
10. My shrimp is 16 centimeters long.
Analysis Questions:
1. The shrimp, like the crab and lobster, has a segmented body. All also have antennae, and use their antennae to feel out their environment.
2. The shrimp is more similar to the lobster than the crab. The shrimp and lobster have body parts that are located in similar regions. The eye, antennae, walking legs, and swimming legs are located in the same regions of the body on both crustaceans.
3. Unlike the crab, the shrimp does not have a long, flat abdomen and does not have cheliped. Unlike the lobster, the shrimp does not have pincher claws on its body.
4. The pleopods help the shrimp swim which is an important part of a shrimp as well as the tail to help control it’s direction. The antenna and antennules are also important because it helps them feel around the ocean. The small hairs on the shrimp on their legs are also significant because they are used to propel and detect movement through the water.

The Odontodactylus Scyllarus, more colloquially referred to as the peacock mantis shrimp, gets its name from its bright peacock-like coloration, its shrimp-like size, and its mantis-like body structure. The mantis shrimp belongs to the kingdom Animalia, the phylum Arthropoda, the subphylum Crustacea, the class Malacostraca, the order Stomatopoda, the family Odontodactylidae, and the genus Odontodactylus (Wikipedia). This species, the Odontodactylus Scyllarus, belongs to a group of 400 other types of mantis shrimp whose lineage can be traced back using phylogenies 500 million years (Guenther). Typically, the size of a peacock mantis shrimp ranges from three to eighteen inches in length (Wikipedia). Because they live in sub-tropical and tropical…

Chemosensory organs in many crustaceans including Hyalella azteca allow them to locate food and mates while entirely avoiding predators. When detecting environmental changes such as the change in chemicals such as salinity, many amphipods have tiny hair-like organs containing sensory cells called sensilla (Hallberg, 2011). These chemosensory olfactory receptors are virtually found on many parts of the crustacean body including antennae, mouthparts and tips of the walking appendages (Hallberg, 2011).…
