Mahmoud Letter
May 5, 2014

To Whom It May Concern:

Mahmoud Alhafez was a student of mine at the International English Center, University of Colorado at Boulder in the Spring, 2014 session. I had the pleasure to have him as a student in my Beginning Reading and Listening & Speaking Classes. I would like to take this opportunity to speak about Mahmoud as a student in my class.

Mahmoud was a responsible and diligent student who made progress in the time since he has been in our program. He engaged himself in classroom activities full-heartedly. He readily got along with other students and participated in groups well. Moreover, he demonstrated very good leadership skills in classroom activities. In addition, he had a positive attitude and has set his academic goals high.

Mahmoud has shown a determination and enthusiasm for learning which was reflected in his diligent assignments. He always asks pertinent and intriguing questions so that he can fully understand and comprehend new grammar points and concepts in writing summaries or on various topics for his presentations. He understands the importance of learning English in reaching his future goals.

All of these reasons support my feeling that Mahmoud Alhafez has the qualities needed to learn and grow as an Engineering student.

Sincerely,

Amelia May Tietsort
ESL Lecturer at the University of Colorado at Boulder

The book you wrote about your life The Other Side of the Sky I thought was very intense and suspenseful overall an amazing story. I just can’t get over the fact that not only against all odds, seeing that you were two women in the Middle East and all but also you had to pretty much take care of your mom through your journey to America. I also loved how you really kept the faith and stayed strong, that must have been hard when at some points like after 911 it seemed like you weren’t going to America at all, I really do admire your determination. Now how was it that you knew America would be like Germany, when you were trying to convince your mom to apply for the world relief program you always used your trip to Germany as a comparison…

Throughout this case study I will focus on four elements. Firstly I will look at Mustafa’s cultural background; his age, interests, education and employment. I will also consider briefly his mother tongue. Secondly I will look at his language learning background. The experiences he has had, and the difficulties he has faced. I will then evaluate Mustafa’s strengths and weaknesses based on two pieces of information I will gather. I will ask him to write 200 words on a chosen subject and I will also record and transcribe his natural spoken English. By analysing this two different forms of English I will be able to evaluate his knowledge of the language. Finally I will briefly recommend future actions…

Thank you for taking your time to read this letter. I have recently read your article November 30, 2006, “Some Say Cop Videos Misleading.” I totally agree with you that some cops are being aggressive, mistreating and physically abusive toward some people that are misbehaving or breaking the laws. As you can imagine most people grew up believing that cops are meant to capture the villains. But you are giving a glimpse to those people in the world that do not have a clue that this kind of violent exist.…

    Developed Countries

All human beings should live an equal life because you are not better than anyone in this class, you are equal to her, he is a human being just like him, you might be brown, she might be white but we should all be treated equally. Would you like being unable to communicate with others? Would you like being unable to read or write? Some people in the underdeveloped/ developing countries are not able to read nor write. We live in a sophisticated society, where developed countries want better education, better life style, and better healthcare. Whereas in the underdeveloped countries, they want a place where they can express their thoughts, a place where they can hold a pencil and place where they can learn about who they are. As Malala Yousafzai said “One child, one book, one pen, one teacher can change the world”. We do not appreciate how blessed we are, we do not know how the children of the underdeveloped/ developing countries are living their lives. And education is the key to success, education is the key to success, education is the key to success, education is the key to success, because I would have not been able to write what I wrote and read what I am about to read right now to you without education. I believe that in order for underdeveloped countries to develop, the richer nations should help the poorer nations by educating them. The richer countries can actually help underdeveloped countries by supporting them financially, sending volunteers to educate those who would like to be educated and by bringing some kids to the developed countries to educate them, because ignorance is created by the lack of education.…
