Letter To Farah's 'The Other Side Of The Sky'
Dear Farah The book you wrote about your life The Other Side of the Sky I thought was very intense and suspenseful overall an amazing story. I just can’t get over the fact that not only against all odds, seeing that you were two women in the Middle East and all but also you had to pretty much take care of your mom through your journey to America. I also loved how you really kept the faith and stayed strong, that must have been hard when at some points like after 911 it seemed like you weren’t going to America at all, I really do admire your determination. Now how was it that you knew America would be like Germany, when you were trying to convince your mom to apply for the world relief program you always used your trip to Germany as a comparison

I certainly enjoyed this autobiography. After reading this book about the author, Philip Caputo, as a young man enlisted and trained so hard to become an American Marine Lieutenant in the Vietnam War, it gave me a whole different perspective of the war. My views of the Vietnam War are usually from the stories my family used to tell me when I was little, but I have never heard it from the viewpoint of a lieutenant. I already knew that when there is a war declared, the war is always attractive to young men who know nothing about it, and even though the men know nothing about the war, the men drafted in the war are…

I am writing to you because I thought it was important to tell you, I really enjoyed your novel, Jasper Jones, and I fancy your writing style. I am not much of a reader and usually when I have to read a book for school, I dread it, but this time was different. Your book was such an easy read and for the first time, I looked forward to sitting down, getting cozy, and reading. The slang that you used enhanced the book and made the story have a realistic feel. I felt as if some of these events could occur in my life. By the time I reached the end of the book, I was extremely intrigued and couldn’t put Jasper Jones down; I had to know what would happen next.…

This story was very inspiring me because the mother was doing anything and everything she could to help her children. A divorce is tragic for both the parents and children, and thankfully it is something I’ve never had to go through with parents; however, her will to want to be the best parent she could be was incredible. It seemed like the…

The older I grow, the more I realize that my mother has always done so much for me. Her love was patient and forgiving in times when I pushed her to her limits as a child. I love my mother, Hester, with all my heart. I remember as a child, being fascinated with the letter A on her bosom. When I was young I was confused about the situation between my parents. I lashed out in anger towards my mother my throwing prickly burrs at her bosom. In doing so, I added to her already thriving pain and guilt. As I grew up and moved away, my mother decided to continue to live in her tiny cottage in Massachusetts. I sent her gifts from England so she can live in luxury as well. I loved her, and she knew she would always be welcome to come live with me in England at any point throughout her life.…

We all face major hardships in our life, but I’ve met very few that have gone through as many as my grandma has. Being born into a world of war and terror is simply unimaginable, but my grandma had to go through it all. Never seeing what life is truly supposed to be like seems depressing, and not knowing when it will end seems even more. My grandma may argue that for her it wasn’t that bad because she didn’t know that life could be any better and was accustomed to living in a war, but from an outside point of view I will never really understand. At the end of the day, this strong woman pulled through and was able to find success. Looking back at her past, my grandma says that she is grateful for the opportunities she was given. My grandma had to go through all the phases of a hero’s journey including the departure, the initiation, and the return.…

We arrived back in Elburn, Illinois to our home where the air conditioning was on and our beds were soft. The water was just coming right out of the fridge and not a filter on top of a well. This country sounded so peaceful that my jaw dropped at the sight of how easy our lives were. I told my mom, “ It’s hard to believe what we just did, but I cannot wait to go back next year!” From this experience I have learned to be grateful for all that I have and to realize how amazing our lives are compared to others. Because of this event, I have seen how other people have it and how less fortunate they are. Now I see the World in a different view and I love everything I…

I feel that your belief in “when we learn how to die, we learn how to live” was really enlightening and true. As I read your philosophies on death and aging, you really described aging as not something to be hated and feared, but something to be embraced. You thought of it as more knowledge and experience, and had no reason to be jealous of young people; why be jealous of a man who is 40 when you’ve already been there? This idea really changed my thoughts on aging.…
