Concert: Mahler’s Third Symphony as conducted by Gustavo Dudamel
Music is simply described as art. It is contextualised as aural art that encompasses a temporal attribute. Each composition of the art form is made up of notes of different pitches creating melody and harmony played at different tempos, meter and rhythm. The genre of music that allows one to effectively experience all that pertains to music composition is most definitely classical music. Classic music is composed of an agglomeration of different music instruments played with different techniques; with each instrument being played at the same note but at different timbres.

Mahler’s composition is simple to understand. This is because its Sonata Allegro is simple to fathom. A Sonata Allegro is a structural form that is composed of the exposition, development and the recapitulation. The implication of this is that the exposition introduces the theme of the song while the development section, as is ostensible, develops the song.
Following this, one is able to understand the mood and the storyline behind the song. A good example of a composition that adheres to this theme is Richard Wagner’s overtures and
Samuel Barber’s adagio for strings. The mood and storyline in the latter is a sombre one.
From its exposition to development to recapitulation, a listener can easily relate with the music. Mahler’s composition, the third symphony, as conducted by Dudamel starts at a low tempo and pitch. The tempo and pitch at times get so unbelievably low that one would assume that no instrument is being played. However, as it progresses, the composition picks up its tempo but the pitch still remains moderately low. The cycle is repeated for a better part

His fluid style and his abilities allowed him to accurately lead the orchestra through the low pitch and slow tempo of the composition and into the slightly faster and louder sections of the composition. The effect of this was that the orchestra relaxed and trusted Dudamels’s expertise and thus produced angelic music.
I enjoyed the composition for it told a story through the Sonata Allegro structure: a composition allows one to follow the compositions as it is played as opposed to a composition where one is fixated on trying to understand it rather than to enjoy it. It is for this reason that my all-time favourite compositions still remain to be Ludwig Beethoven’s
Symphony number 9 and flower duets Lakme by Leo Delibes as performed by Anna
Netrebko and Elina Garanca. Be that as it may, Mahler’s composition did not enthral my interest. The composition was too long and too low. I kept getting lost throughout the composition. Despite this, my all-time favourite conductors still remains Dudamel for he represents the younger generation of conductors. As a conductor he has achieved quite a lot for a man his age. It is for this reason that he inspires our generation to dream
