Tom Simmons, Marketing Manager for Green Acres Seed Company, is trying to make a strategy for increasing the company’s sale and profit even though province of Ontario has a highly competitive seed corn market. By setting a promising marketing strategy, the company could take over small part of market share from leading company, and this would result that Green Acre could get high reputation and awareness in Ontario as well as in Canada. Currently, seed leading company is Pioneer that has more than 50 percent of the market, and Green Acre has about 11 percent. When we read the background paragraph, there are two types of corn: grain corn and silage corn. Grain corn is harvested only the ear and used for commercial purpose. On the other hands, silage corn is harvested the entire plant and used for feeding livestock. Especially, leading company and 2nd and 3rd company are focusing on grain corn, because this product can be converted into commercial product, and this would make more profit than silage corn. For Green Acre’s position of grain corn product, it is very hard to penetrate and take market share in the grain corn product area. Thus, it is proposed that Tom Simmons, Marketing Manager for the company came up with solution by targeting silage producer with hybrids having high silage performance attributes, and average price of six varieties is . There are three reasons for choosing this strategy. First, market leader in Ontario is vague. Second, the silage strategy make the company differentiate from competitors. Third, Green Acre has better silage performance characteristic than competitors. In order to catch some useful information from 400 farmers they did market research.…

The simplicity of the market, in turn, implies that the market is also stable. Movements in agricultural markets are typically foreseeable and don’t move at the speed of a dynamic industry such as technology. Saying this, the research undertaken by SRI makes it possible to create a new product which corners the market. Creating a higher-yield seed-type may have led to SS becoming the UK’s largest seed breeder. The possibility of events such as a competitor developing a better product or contamination getting into an order of Symphony Seeds (and thus, the product falls out of favour) pose risks to the stability of Symphony Seed’s position in the market.…

Politics is often studied as a collection of individual events and moments, never truly connected but still influencing the lives of every individual. Many historians, especially those dealing with farmer suicides in India, note that politics cannot be seen as a series of events but as a process or continuum of interconnected moments that truly influence each other. As Palagummi Sainath has noted in his multiple articles regarding rural communities in the Times of India, instead of seeing farmer suicides as a singular event, they must be seen through the lens of a process, mainly “the process of commercialization of the countryside and its consequences.”[1] The problem in not seeing the suicides as a continuum of past policies is that until the media and government realize that, there will continue to be problems in finding the underlying causes of the suicides and in addressing the tensions that have led to the conflict in the first place. Until then, there will be few effective solutions that the communities or the government can put into action. This is especially important to the situation of farmer suicides in Karnataka from 1998 to 2006. The political climate of the time shows that the government saw the entire period as an isolated event that was completely blamed on the farmers and not on any external sources such as the processes of commercialization and globalization. When one considers the entire continuum of these processes since the 1980s, a completely different understanding comes to light. A fuller study shows that due to the introduction of genetically modified crops into the Karnataka economy, there have been negative socio-cultural, political, and economic impacts on the region, even though the Karnataka government could have organized multiple methods of action to alleviate the…

On December 3, 2013, Rick Welsh, a professor of food studies visited Monmouth College to speak about agricultural biotechnology, along with how it has been developed and the impacts that it is having on society. After hearing Professor Welsh mention that he was going to be speaking about agricultural biotechnology, I instantly thought of the documentary film that I watched a couple days ago, The World According to Monsanto. Monsanto is a food company that is one of the largest advocators of agricultural biotechnology, and both Welsh and the documentary explain how Monsanto’s actions have been controversial. Another connection that I made from watching Professor Welsh’s presentation was to the AP environmental class that I took my senior year of high school. Agricultural biotechnology is one of the topics that we devoted a lengthy amount of time to studying, which is why I thought of the class while Mr. Welsh was speaking. One part of Professor Welsh’s presentation that I thought was interesting was we he discussed a U.S. Supreme Court case, Diamond vs. Chakrabarty. The decision of this case made it legal to patent living organisms, which provided huge boosts to the biotechnology industry. In a 5-4 ruling, the court ruled in favor of Chakrabarty and upheld the patent. I thought that it was interesting to hear that it is possible for living organisms to be patented. In my opinion, living organisms should not be able to be patented. It seems inhumane for someone to own the rights of another living being. Discussing the Diamond vs. Chakrabarty U.S. Supreme Court case also made me make a connection to the American Government class that I took my senior year of high school. Obviously, since it was government class, we talked about various court cases. It is possible that at some point we even covered the Diamond vs. Chakrabarty case, but I do not remember. Another part of Professor Welsh’s speech that I thought was intriguing…
