[Macroeconomics week2] | |

In this week’s assignment we are to evaluate two industries. The following paragraphs describe both industries and its characteristics. By defining these industries I will determine its effects on the other markets in that firm and whether or not other firms can or cannot succeed. If Industry A has twenty firms with a concentration ratio of thirty percent this is known as a monopolistic company with a low concentration. There are many characteristics of this type of industry one example is that it has limited control over the market; this is because there are many buyers and sellers. Another example is a monopolistic industry generally has a decent control over the price. If a company has enough influence over the market can be perceived as a price maker. A third characteristic is product differentiation. A product can have the same qualities as another but a few things determine its appeal. Product: location, packaging, and brand name all play a role on whether or not it will be sold. For example if a product is at an eye level it has a better chance of selling versus something on the top or bottom shelf. If the packaging looks pretty it has a more marketable appeal and finally if a product is made by a well-known brand such as Redbull. The last characteristic of a monopolistic company is that it is easy to enter and exit in and out of the market and still obtain some sort of profit. If I was in this industry and there was an increase in demand I would expect either a firm adjustment or an industry adjustment. A firm adjustment means that there will be an increase in production of a good. An industry adjustment means that if a company has more than a normal profit other firm’s will enter the market and if they have a loss or just a normal profit other firms are less likely to enter the market. What I anticipate in long term adjustments means that the concentration

Monopolistic competition has few to many competitors and is a little difficult to enter the business because the goods and services they have to offer are similar products to the competitors but differentiated by the brand name and price. The individual firms have some control over the prices, examples of goods and services they offer are sports wear which look the same but have different prices depending on the brand names, local fitness center, etc.…

Oligopoly is a very common market form where the sellers are so small in numbers that the actions of any one of them would affect the cost of the products and competition would significantly visible. “Oligopoly is defined as an industry dominated by few firms that, by virtue of their individual sizes are large enough to influence the market price” (Case, Fair, Oster, 2009). These companies are very common when it is carefully observed and measured. The competition would be seriously to do business in a better fashion. In oligopoly concentration ratios are measured, implemented and documented by unites. Each oligopolist is likely to be aware of the actions of the others because of the smaller area of activities. Large companies use concentration ratios to measure the share of industry position according to the current situation. The large company of the women’s and girl’s that make dresses, fluid milk industry, envelope for mailing and computers suppliers would be discovered in this paper to determine if they meet the objectives of oligopoly.…

Monopoly is a term to describe an industry where a seller of a product or service does not have a competitor offering a close substitute. The word is derived from the Greek words monos (meaning one) and polein (meaning to sell). Rarely does a pure monopoly exist. In a pure monopoly there is only one company making and selling the item in question; however there can also be the situation where there is one company who has the bulk of sales and the other firms in the same market have little or no impact on the overriding company. Due to lack of competitors, the monopoly company has control of the supply and price of the good or service, unless there is government intervention. The monopoly will continue to make more goods as long as their marginal cost is equal to their marginal revenue. The monopoly will stop selling goods at the point when the next item sold lowers their marginal revenue on the previous goods sold. Because there is no competition the monopoly company has more control in making a profit. In normal business situations this would cause other companies to form and try to get into the same industry hoping to make a profit as well.…

The majority of time an oligopoly is used describe a world market; however, the term oligopoly also describes conditions in smaller markets where a few gas stations, grocery stores or alternative restaurants or establishments dominate in their fields. A distinguishing characteristic of an oligopoly is the interdependence of firms. This means that any action on the part of one firm with respect to output, price, or quality will cause a reaction on the side of other firms.…

    2. In an oligopoly, there are only a few firms that make up an industry. This select group of firms has control over the price and, like a monopoly, an oligopoly has high barriers to entry. The products that the oligopolistic firms produce are often differentiated and, therefore, the companies, which are competing for market share (through pricing , quality and services), are interdependent as a result of market forces.…

The RBC view of the macroeconomy is premised on perfect competition in all three macro markets (goods markets, labor markets, and financial markets). For the seminal issue of the degree of (goods) price stickiness, it is goods markets on which we need to focus, so we limit our attention to goods markets from here on. In perfect competition, there is a sense in which no supplier makes any purposeful, meaningful decision regarding the price that it sets. Rather, because of perfect substitutability between all products (recall the assumption of homogenous goods in a perfectly-competitive market), firms are all price-takers. A view of firms as price-takers is incompatible with the notion that we would now like to entertain, that of firms only infrequently setting their prices. Thus, the most basic step we must take in order to even begin to conceptually understand the idea of (possibly sticky) price-setting is to assert that firms are indeed price-setters, rather than pure price-takers. As you should recall from basic microeconomics, the market structure of monopoly offers a relatively easy analytical framework in which firms are indeed price-setters. However, from the point of view of macroeconomics, pure monopoly seems an untenable view to adopt. After all, it is implausible, at the aggregate level, to asset that there is one producer of all of the goods that are produced and sold in the economy. A more realistic view should admit the simple fact that there are many producers of goods as well as the fact that these goods are not all identical to each other. That is, there is some imperfect substitutability between the many goods an economy produces. The concept of monopolistic competition offers an intermediate theoretical ground between pure monopoly and perfect competition. Indeed, the terminology itself suggests that the concept is an intermediate one between pure monopoly and…
