Creamy Creations

1. I believe that the Burger Barn executives are moving forward in a beneficial direction. Burger Barn executives are moving in a direction that will increase efficiency and potentially increase both productivity and profit. Although their organizational approach can be seen as a “Machine Metaphor” (Miller, 2011), in an Ice cream shop, such classical approach can be beneficial. The idea of having multiple stations to reduce the time the customer is waiting to finalize their purchase reaps good benefits. Therefore their positive optimism with regards to the future of Creamy Creations is a valid one. Although their organizational approach looks good now, there are some potential pitfalls. As Burger Barn executives look towards a more productive future, I believe they will ponder on the idea of still maximizing efficiency and productivity at low cost. Are multiple employees needed to keep things moving faster? Or is there a possibility that moving towards a “self-serve” approach can overall benefit Creamy Creations? This can be beneficial to some extent, but it can also minimize the interpersonal communication one would get with a “Creamy Creator” (Miller, 2011), which was one of the factors that kept this business as a family-student oriented business that created job opportunities for students.

2. The principles of classical management are reflected in several ways at Creamy Creations. First, the development of “workstations” indicates that there is specialization, were every station and person has a specific function. As these workstations are in place, there is standardization taking place as each person is capable of rotating in each station and hence can be substituted in any specific situation. Lastly, following the specific rules and standards set for the operation of each workstation makes this organization predictable.

All the tenets of Fayol’s Theory of Classical Management are evident

    The definition of McDonaldization is “The process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world” (Ritzer, 2004, p. 1). There are four main characteristics of McDonaldization which will be explained in relation to McDonalds. These characteristics are efficiency, calculability, predictability and control. Efficiency within McDonalds is demonstrated by the automated soft drink filling machines, the drive through where the customer leaves before they eat their meals and there is a selection of food is always ready for consumption. These examples help reduce the time it takes for a customer to arrive and complete their purchase which allows McDonalds to cater for a higher demand in a set period of time. Efficiency is also optimized by “the use of the customer as labour” (Nancarrow et al, 2005, p. 298) in ways such as them carrying their own food to tables and putting their own waste into the bin. Calculability relates to how the organisation measures its performance and sets its targets. With regards to McDonalds this calculability would come from “the quantitative aspects of products sold” (Ritzer, 2004, p. 13). These aspects could include the portion size of a meal, the time it takes to cook a burger or how long it takes for a customer to order and receive their meal.     The McDonaldization of Society is based off the findings of George Ritzer (1993), in which he found four basic principles that our society correlates with the McDonalds Empire; those four principles are efficiency, predictability, uniformity and control. Ray Kroc is a marketer for McDonalds Corporation. He was responsible and claims the high success rate for McDonald’s massive expansion. The idea Kroc had, was that in “fifty seconds, a customer would be served an entire meal consistent of hamburger, fries and milkshake. From the time the cashier took my order, it took no less than 41 seconds to complete my order and send me on my way.     The machine metaphor points out the ways that organizations are specialized, standardized, and predictable. When I try to apply this metaphor to real life, the first thing that comes to mind is the assembly line inside a factory. To create a product each member has their role on the assembly line and there isn’t much deviation from the set process otherwise the product may be unpredictable. In an assembly line the work is done simultaneously to achieve one goal. If a worker falls quits or is unavailable, that worker can be replaced by another. The ironic idea about the machine metaphor is that when it became popular during the industrial period people working in factories were commonplace and those people emulated the functioning of a machine.
