Unlawful Killings in Sri Lanka

What does it mean to be a human being? It means you have needs that need to be met and a life to protect. There are certain rights that come with being a human, and by living in fear for your life those rights are violated. Sri Lanka is a small country in southern Asia. It is ruled by a president. Their definition of a president differs from ours, however. Like us, the citizens of this country vote on who they want as their president, but not all is fair in politics. The elections are usually rigged by those who are considered higher authorities. So election or not, the person that will better benefit the country, not its inhabitants, will win. This country has two main political parties. One of these is the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. It consists of people who are dedicated to making their home a fair country. “Civilians are literally begging on their knees.” (Annabelle Conroy ).
Unlawful killing is a major issue in Sri Lanka. Soldiers have been known to kill innocent civilians. Video tapes have been made by locals and sent to the United Nations. The Sri Lankan government says that the videos aren’t real. “This incident is a good example of the government covering up serious abuses by military officers.” (Annabelle Conroy). Regardless of what their government says, Annabelle Conroy says that, “There is so much evidence of these human rights abuses.” Sri Lankan Navy officers have been accused of killing civilians during the final stages of their civil war. They are also known to harass Indian fishermen. On one instance, a guy was shot dead just for straying into Sri Lankan waters. One specific story stands out through all of this. “The Sri Lankan Navy stopped an Indian fishing boat. Twenty eight year old Jayakumar, his brother Senthili and friend Rajendran were ordered to jump onto the water. Senthili and Rajandran jumped to sea but Jayakumar remained on the boat. A navy officer tied a noose around Jayakumar’s neck and

On July 5, 1884, four sailors were cast away from their ship in a storm 1,600 miles from the Cape of Good Hope. Their lifeboat contained neither water nor much food. On the 20th day of their ordeal, Dudley and Stevens, without the assistance or agreement of Brooks, cut the throat of the fourth sailor, a 17- or 18-year-old boy. They had not eaten since day 12. Water had been available only occasionally. At the time of the death, the men were probably about 1,000 miles from land. Prior to his death, the boy was lying helplessly in the bottom of the boat. The three surviving sailors ate the boy’s remains for four days, at which point they were rescued by a passing boat. They were in a seriously weakened condition.…

It is no surprise to hear of families getting torn apart, because of injuries from the war, and from suicide: people are killing themselves, so they can get away from the horrors of war. Ananda was trying to commit suicide, when he “was lying against a corner, trying with what energy he had left to stab himself in the throat” (Ondaatje 196). Furthermore, there are many people losing family members, because of public bombs, and other devastating acts of murder occurring in Sri Lanka.…

From the early-1980s to the 1990s, Sri Lanka was in a Civil War involving three essential groups: the government, the anti-government insurgents in the south and the separatists in the north. The civil war lasted 25 years killing 80 000 – 100000 people which caused economic, political and environmental distress for Sri Lanka. While the Tamil Tigers (the insurgents) were considered terrorists in 32 countries across the globe, the Sri-Lankan government forces were also accused of abusing human rights. This is the backdrop of Michael Odaatje’s novel, Anil’s Ghost as he carefully uses the compelling protagonist, Anil Teressa to illustrate the social, cultural and political realities of the civil war era. Anil Teressa, a Sri Lankan expatriate and…

They feel instilling fear and intimidating a group encourages their political gains. Destroying lives for political gain is wrong. Many times groups like Tamil Tigers had used the impact of blowing themselves up to offer glory to God’s garden. This cynical sanctity has escalated to using the impact of destroying others right for life and manipulating the media to suit their political goals (Goodman, 2010). This without dispute is wrong because not only do they manipulate their intent but their targets are noncombatants. These persons murdered by militants are of innocents and caught in the line of fire, in…
