Lucas's Injury: A Short Story
Lucas’s Injury It was a normal day. Hannah, Avery, and I, were at daycare playing outside. The sun was shining down on us as we walked barefoot on the soft, yet prickly, green grass. Our daycare lady has a playground with a big, plastic slide, along with a set of three swings, a big sandbox, a see-saw, and a field to run around in. The slide is our favorite thing to play on because sliding down it, felt as if we were speeding down a highway. We played on the slide for about an hour, and then it got boring. My friends and I went to the sandbox to make sand food. The sand on our bare feet felt like we were on the beach, frolicking on the dry sand and little pebbles that aren’t quite big enough to hurt our feet. Daycare is my favorite place to be. It felt like luxury, being with friends and at a place that made me feel happy, all at once.
“What would you like to eat?” I asked Hannah and Avery.
“Oh. Can I please have a big sand cake? Be careful while making it. You don’t want to get burnt,” Hannah replied. Avery nodded with agreement.
My brother walked slowly up the hill, humming . His voice was like one thousand needles being shoved into my brain. Except, we should have been paying attention to him. My daredevil little brother, snuck around the side of the slide. He knew that this was one of the only times that Nene doesn’t pay

I could tell she was shocked, but at the same time, not surprised that it happened, knowing Lucas’s behavior. I felt remorseful even though I didn’t do anything wrong. My mom picked Lucas up in her arms, cradled him until he stopped crying, and then ran to the car to bring him to the hospital.
Later that night, I found out my brother wasn’t as hurt as bad I thought. He didn’t have a broken bone. His arm was just out of its socket. I realized I loved him even though he drove me crazy. I should pay attention to him more often because I don’t know what I would do if something super horrendous happened to

One day at recess, I climbed all the way to the top just like I always did, and I looked all around me at the kids playing on the playground. They were all laughing and running around having fun. I wonder when it will be time to go back inside? I thought. Just then a loud noise filled the playground.…

In a moment I knew. I was the one who was wrong. It wasn’t mom. It wasn’t mom in the least. It was all me. I understood being right wasn’t worth it at all; I could have been right but I was wrong. I was wrong because I thought it was worth it to be right. If I had given up the fight this moment wouldn’t be happening. I glanced over the scene once more. Taking everything in, I felt a tear dripping down my face so slowly. I wanted to put the event in reverse but I knew it was impossible.…

I waited out in the cold and snow for what seemed like forever. I eventually saw our car pull up to the park. I saw my dad and my brother get out of the car and hurry towards me. When they got to me, my dad picked me up and carried me to the car. We got in and he drove me home. Then he helped me get out of the car. The pain was so bad I had to hop to the door. Once inside our house, I hopped over to the couch, and laid down.…

I sat in the corner, occasionally glancing up at the other faces. There was this one lady who looked like she was about to cry most likely because she was frightened, and there was this man who was shaking in fear. Seeing these faces just made the situation worse for me. I tightly squeezed my mom’s arm, hoping it would make me feel better…

“Charlie, Charlie! We need you over here now, hurry up!” Yelled Madison. “Oh crap sorry, I’m coming.” I replied. I didn’t want to get up but I needed to help him, I needed to prove myself. He lay upon the stretcher still as a calm night, so peaceful yet so loud. I look at him and pray that he fights this and that he will be ok because for some reason I feel guilt, a huge pile of guilt on my shoulders. I stood back just because of a comment that I should be used to by now. His pain is all on me. I should have helped him sooner and maybe his chances at living would be higher, if…

You could feel the tension in the car. I soon realized how similar we are and how he had already gone through what I’m going through as a teenager. We talked about life and how we would help my mom if Sadie did happen to die. Sadie was my mom’s first dog so we knew this would hit her hard. When we arrived at the vet and Sadie needed a blood transfusion which is risky but my mom would try anything to save her. Sad about Sadie, my mom was anxious to see what would happen. While Sadie was undergoing the blood transfusion my mom told my brother and I to get the other dogs so they could say goodbye to Sadie just in case. Again, we were in the car and started talking. It was crazy because those two car rides made my brother and I closer than we had ever been before. My brother gave me advice on my friends, boys, and my parents. When we got back to the vet we were just in time, Sadie had just gotten out of surgery. Our vet has done it once again. Sadie was going to be alright, but we would have to keep a close eye on her for a…

It was the day that I was dreading all week. It was the day my brother was leaving for college. Since the day i was born me and my older brother have been really close. We liked the same things, hung out with the same people, and played on the same sports teams. We did everything together. As time went on nothing really changed even through high school we were still really close. The day he was leaving for college I was at my friends house and didn’t want to go home until the minute he was leaving. I didn’t want to see him until he left because i knew it was going to be hard for me to watch him leave so i figured if i didn’t see him until he said bye it wouldn’t be as bad. Another part of me also didn’t want to show him weakness, that i was…

Before going to kindergarten I went to a preschool that was just across the street from where I lived. I loved it, I remember my teacher would always have story time before we took a nap. She would let one of us pick out a book from the book shelf and then she would read it. I looked forward to going to school because the fact that she read a different book every day. Reading everyday would make me excited because it was one step away from me learning how to read. Sometimes she would let us take a book home so that we could try to read it by ourselves. I loved looking at all the different pictures and colors in the books. She made reading fun and made us realize that kindergarten was going to be interesting. At this point I felt confident about going to kindergarten.…

On November 6th, I observed a four year-old boy at the UCI Early Childhood Education Center. My observation starts at 4:10pm, and it lasts for thirty minutes. At the time I did the observation, all of the children woke up from the nap time and started to play outside of the classroom. The playground is at least seventy-five square feet, and it has many play stations for children. Three classrooms share the same outside playground, and the age groups of those children are from three years old to five years old. All of the children could access to the outside playground through the back door in their classrooms. From the left side of the playground, there is a basketball stand next to the tree, then moving toward to the right, there is a lawn in the central of the playground. On the grass, there is a big…

As I started up the stairs I could not grasp the fact that my parents of 25 years were going to separate. Tears for the first time started to stream down my face as I walked to my room. Beside my Jewry box laid a letter from my dad and a set of wedding rings. The letter just said at simple I love you. At that moment in my life I wish I could have believed him. After I read the letter my brother and I sat and talked or at least tried. After all the man that was my hero had walked out on my family for another woman.…
