Observation Of Early Childhood Observation
On November 6th, I observed a four year-old boy at the UCI Early Childhood Education Center. My observation starts at 4:10pm, and it lasts for thirty minutes. At the time I did the observation, all of the children woke up from the nap time and started to play outside of the classroom. The playground is at least seventy-five square feet, and it has many play stations for children. Three classrooms share the same outside playground, and the age groups of those children are from three years old to five years old. All of the children could access to the outside playground through the back door in their classrooms. Boy 1’s attention was distracted by boy 3, so he jumped down from the stepper and followed by boy 3 to the wooden tracks. Since the wooden track has to be connected together before they play, boy 1 is very concentrate on building the track. However, when boy 1 finished half of the work, boy 2 and boy 3 started putting cars on the track and playing with the cars. Boy 1 started to yell to boy 2 and boy 3, “do not play with they car, we have not finish building the track yet!” boy 2 dropped the car in his hand and started to help boy 1 with the track, but boy 3 was still playing with the car. Then boy 1 grabbed boy 3’s car and told boy 3 to build the track. Boy 1’s tantrum showed a low level of emotional regulation, he was frustrating about building the track, so he cannot control his frustration and put the anger on his peers. “Play is a form of emotional release for many children” (The Importance of Play), in this case, boy 1 expressed his feeling of anxiety in this
