lone survivor
ne Survivor: The eyewitness account of Operation Redwing and the lost heroes of SEAL team 10 is a true story, that like most books about the SEALs, starts out for the most part with BUD/S. There is a bit of a lead up to this and it starts with Marcus Luttrell, the lone survivor, going through his tough, country style upbringing in Texas. At a very young age Luttrell decides he wants to become a Navy Seal, seeking out help and training from a former Green Beret named Billy Shelton.

The next portion of the book falls into the typical SEAL book. It begins with Luttrell’s sign-up with the Navy, leads through a short section of basic training, then takes the reader through BUD/S including the much documented “Hell Week.” I won’t go into the details of these portions, since it has been written about and shown on television so much. Lone Survivor does go through Luttrell’s specific experiences, difficulties, and accomplishments as well as moving into the less documented Demolitions and Tactics Training and a fascinating brief on sniper school.

Next it is off to Afghanistan for a variety of different missions with a few details included. This leads into what becomes the primary mission and bulk of the book; Operation Redwing. A high up Taliban leader and known associate of Osama Bin Laden had risen up a most wanted list and it was up to Luttrell and his men to capture or kill him.

On June 27 th, 2005 Marcus Luttrell, Danny Dietz, Michael Murphy, and Matthew Axelson, all SEALs, roped out of a helicopter into the rugged terrain of Afghanistan to take out their target. Luttrell initially had worries about the terrain and lack of cover that later proved just. The four SEALs quickly realized they were getting into any sniper’s worst nightmare, difficult terrain with no cover of any kind, so they had to backtrack and try to find better routes and hides.

After being dug in for quite sometime, a trio of goat herders stumble upon the SEALS, causing a difficult moral and

SEAL Team Six begins with a quote, a soldier stating “I like shooting and I love hunting. But I never did enjoy killing anybody. It’s my job. If I don’t get those bastards. Then they’re gonna kill a lot of these kids dressed up like marines” (Wasdin 1). This quote explains the delicate balance between morality and brotherhood; killing to protect your own, something which Wasdin deals with throughout the novel. The themes of morality and brotherhood are developed through Wasdin as he progresses through the story.…

Following the quote, the film “Lone Survivor” was played. The film focused on a group of Navy SEALs, including one named Marcus, who are going into Afghanistan in order to kill the Taliban leader. The Taliban leader is responsible for killing over twenty US Marines as well as people who had allegedly helped or aided the United States. When facing the Taliban, the Navy SEALs are outnumbered and several are killed. Back-up is called, although when that fails, more Navy SEALs are killed. Marcus remains as the last Navy SEAL alive on the mission, or a “lone survivor”, and is rescued by a villager. The villager takes Marcus into his home and prevents the Taliban from killing him. The villager does this as Marcus is a guest in his home, meaning the…

    Last Stand of Fox Company

There were many brave heroes at the battle of Fox Hill but one Private Hector Cafferata’s story stands above them all. On the first night at Fox Hill, Cafferata found his foxhole surrounded by the enemy as the Chinese passed through the gaps in the American lines during the first night of the attack. Two enemy riflemen reached the edge of their hole and Cafferata clubbed them with his shovel. One of them dropped a Thompson submachine gun. Cafferata picked it up and emptied it into another approaching squad. He and his foxhole buddy retreated back to a trench they had identified earlier, to join two other Marines shoulder to shoulder to shoot upon a wall of enemy that overran the machine gun emplacement next to them. The four Marines in the trench provided supporting cover fire to repel the Chinese assault as the enemy focused on the machine gun emplacements, leaving fire team after fire team dead. The other Marines mowed down the attacking enemy but were still overcome through the sheer number of attacking forces and the inevitably running out of ammo, often taking a few more of the enemy with them in bayonet and hand-to-hand combat.…

Operation Gothic Serpent in Oct 1993 in Mogadishu, Somalia has been labeled one of the bloodiest firefights for United States troops. It has also arguably been remembered as one of the U.S. military’s blunders. This book is about 1stSgt. Kasal’s life leading up to his most honorable moment while in the battle of Fallujah. The book starts out by telling how 1stSgt. Kasal grew up in Afton, Iowa. He grew up on farm like most other families in his hometown. But with farming becoming obsolete in the shadow of large corporations, Brad Kasal already knew by junior high that he didn’t want to slave on a farm to barely scrape by like his father. He already had the Marine Corps in his sights. January 1984, Kasal left his hometown of Afton, Iowa and got a plane destined for MCRD, San Diego. Kasal shined right away and became a squad leader and was meritoriously promoted to Private First Class by graduation and instructed that he was going to indeed be a grunt like he wanted. After graduating as the honor graduate in School of Infantry, Kasal was stationed on Camp Pendleton with 2nd battalion, 1st marine regiment. He was a PFC in Weapons Co. as a Dragon gunner. Two months after checking in with his unit, Kasal was again meritoriously promoted. Kasal’s first deployed to the Western Pacific on a Marine Expeditionary Unit in June 1986. Shortly after he would win an NCO of the quarter award and once again get another meritorious promotion. Kasal throughout his career would consistently pick up meritorious promotions all the way to Sergeant Major. By March of 2003 when Operation Iraqi Freedom started, Kasal was 1stSgt of Kilo Co. 3d Battalion, First Marine Regiment. While still 1stSgt of Kilo, they were part of the second attempt to take back Fallujah in November of 2004. The mission was to take back Fallujah by getting rid of any insurgents left in the city. Because there were innocents still within the city limits, rules of engagement meant to not fire unless fired upon or if the enemy is seen with a weapon. This made things very difficult. It would have been very bad politically to go in and just blow up everything that moved, so instead…
