FAILURE; A COMPONENT OF SUCCESS
OR THE END OF A DREAM?
Sometimes life just does not allow us to reach our goals, sometimes people find bumps and rough patches between them and their dreams, and sometimes it seems like the only option is to give up and move on, however, if you really want something and don’t get it at the first attempt, are you a loser for failing or a success for trying?. Michael Arndt’s script, “Little Miss Sunshine”, tells the story of Olive Hoover, and how her dream of participating in a children’s beauty pageant brings her, and her dysfunctional but caring family into an eventful road trip from their home in Albuquerque, New Mexico to California. That conversation with Frank put things into perspective for him, and Dwayne realizes that he does not need to be in perfect shape or have perfect vision, of he has a dream he will keep trying to reach it. In comparison to Dwayne and Richard, Edwin Hoover, grandfather of the former and father of Richard, is not a person with a defined goal; though part of that might be to the fact that he is an elder who has had a fulfilling life. He focuses on living the time he has left the way he wants it to. While he is foul-mouthed, Edwin is also very supportive of his family, especially of Olive, who he coaches for the talent competition, and when the girl is doubtful of herself, her chances of winning Little Miss Sunshine and how that would mean that her father would hate her for being a loser, Grandpa comforts her by saying that "A real loser is someone who's so afraid of not winning he doesn't even try." (Arndt 50.) This is really important for Olive, because it gives her the confidence needed to go on stage the next day and give her hundred percent in the competition, even after she realized that she was not like all the other girls in the pageant; it is also the lesson that Richard and Dwayne learned on their own after their dreams
