Literature Essay #1  on "How to Be a Writer" (Short Story)
Literature Essay #1 on "How to Be a Writer" (short story) by Lorrie Moore

Lorrie Moore writes some of the easiest and most rewarding short stories I have read. It was compelling and threw me right into the story as if I were recalling life experiences. She also has done a great deal of work in the writers field that is pretty interesting. But this, so far, is my personal favorite.
Before learning more about the short story that I favor so much, I will educate you on her education and wards she has accomplished within her time as a writer. Her short story collections are Self-Help, Like Life, and the New York Times[->0] bestseller Birds of America[->1]. She has contributed to The Paris Review[->2]. Her first story appeared in The New Yorker[->3], "You're Ugly, Too," was later included in The Best American Short Stories of the Century, edited by John Updike[->4]. Another story, "People Like That Are the Only People Here," also published in The New Yorker, was reprinted in the 1998 edition of the annual collection The Best American Short Stories; the tale of a young child falling sick, the piece was loosely patterned on events in Moore's own life. The story was also included in the 2005 anthology Children Playing Before a Statue of Hercules, edited by David Sedaris. This is only her short story that are well known.
She has also written a variety of novels such as Anagrams (1986), Who Will Run the Frog Hospital? (1994), and A Gate at the Stairs (2009). Who Will Run the Frog Hospital is the story of a woman vacationing with her husband who recalls an intense friendship from her adolescence. A Gate at the Stairs takes place just after the September 11 attack and is about a twenty-year-old Midwestern woman's coming of age. I have not read any of her novels but I am sure they are nothing short of spectacular.
Now we move on to her awards. Lorrie won the 1998 O. Henry Award for her short story "People Like That Are the Only People Here,"

The most interesting short stories that caught my undivided attention were: “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and “Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot” by Robert Olen Butler. These stories were both fascinating and intriguing in the sense that they made me feel like if I was the actual character. You could feel the pain and anguish the characters felt, even the desperation. It got to a point that I felt pity for the protagonist whom in both stories where narrating. Here we can see how someone can feel so desperate that they think the only way out is by taking their lives. Both Charlotte Perkins Gilman and Robert Olen Butler created an incredible form of fiction that makes you question if the scenes in the stories can truly happen in reality.…

Born Lula Carson Smith, on 19 February, 1917, in Columbus, Georgia, as the daughter of a well-to-do watchmaker and jeweler of French Hugenot extraction, she moved to New York at seventeen to study piano but ended up studying creative writing at Columbia and NYU instead. There she published her first story in 1936, and in 1937, married Reeves McCullers, a serviceman and aspiring writer. They moved to North Carolina, living there for two years. Carson McCullers’ adult life was a mixture of emotional unhappiness and bad health, but with luminous talent she drew upon her empathy and experience to compose resonant, ballad-like stories about the inner lives of marginal, often physically scarred characters who were tormented by loneliness.…

My name is Bryan Smith and my story begins back in the year 2007 when I joined the military during my junior year of high school. Since then life hasn’t been the same. First off you need to know growing up for me was never easy. My mother never believed that medically there could be anything wrong with me and if there was, I must have made it up. Anyway, on one miserable day in late 2009, things changed in a devastating way when I was diagnosed with what’s called Scheuermann’s kyphosis disease. This disease is a degenerative spinal disease that just wears and wears at the disks and vertebra in the spine until nothing is left. Along with that it cause kyphosis, or a severe curvature.…

I never thought the day would come where I’d have to admit to myself I had an addiction. The hardest part was to except the fact I was an addict of painkillers and admitting it to my family so that I could get the help and support needed to get clean. Having a child at the age of sixteen was the second factor, which made me grow up faster than a normal child at my age would have had to. Living the life of an addict was a struggle everyday but, getting help was the hardest part of it all. I’ll live with this disease for the rest of my life because recovery is a lifelong path. In my experience with Writing II, being able to get extra help in perfecting my writing skills was beneficial and helped me understand composition 1. Also being in a small class environment was useful for talking to other classmates and with getting help; which also helped me stay focused on my writings. By going over Critical Reviews before Composition 1, it helped tremendously by preparing me for my next class. Going to seminars and workshops was interesting, entertaining and was also awarding with all the information I had received out of them. I was nervous going into Writing II and Composition 1 at the same time but it ended up being easier than I had expected. Although I was surprised at how little work there was for Writing II, I feel…

The essential essence of the South has been lost throughout time. We are no longer complacent with the slow paced ideals of southern culture. The southern traditions of yesterday have taken a backseat to the fast paced lifestyles that have evolved over centuries. The manner of southern upbringing, the depictions of the southern ideals, and the charm that is indicative of the South are seen today as symbols of the past. In literature, southern characters have been created to convey the representations of the South. In William Faulkner’s timeless short story “A Rose for Emily,” Miss Emily Grierson and her father Mr. Grierson uphold the outdated ideas of chivalry and southern traditions. The Griersons are Faulkner’s commissioners of the old South.…

I have learned a lot in my lifetime about reading and writing and without it today it would be almost impossible to get very far in life. I have become the writer I am today by mostly paying attention in school and learning at home how to read and write correctly without many mistakes. When you were at home as a child most children would have a bedtime story read to them at night or they would learn how to read the stories themselves. Most children when they are young learn to write as well to when they are learning how to write their ABCs or even learning how to spell out their names or plenty of other words. As a child you loved to be read to before you would go to bed. Some children had this opportunity and some did not. Most of the time children were read to by their parents or in some cases if parents were not home they were read to by babysitters or other relatives that were at home. This also occurs in the same situation with writing. When a child is at home he is taught by parents or even by some tutors. This also could occur in the school when children are being taught their ABCs and other spelling materials throughout elementary school. Throughout my life there are many great books to read and that I got the opportunity to read throughout my lifetime. One of my favorite books as a child in elementary school had to be “Charlotte’s Web” due to the fact that my favorite animal as a child was a pig. There were lots of other books I had read in middle school, but my favorite book in middle school was “Holes”. I loved this book so much because I thought it was one of the most interesting books I had read. I also loved the book because it had a great movie to go with it which became one of my favorite movies in middle school. I never read a lot of books in high school except the books I had to read in english class. The only book I had read on my own was the “Hunger Games”. I read this book mostly because I wanted to see how greatly the book and the movie…

To me Easter Sunday has always been a very important holiday. My whole family always gets together to celebrate it. We always go to the Ranch, and have lots of activities, and many kinds of delicious food. In the spring of 2010 I was expecting my first baby. It was a great feeling, but it turned out that his due date was on Holy Friday , just two days before Easter Sunday. I had been feeling great during my hole pregnancy, so when I had my 39th week visit to the Doctor, and he asked me if I wanted to induce labor or wait for another week, I didn't hesitate to chose to wait. Why? Because I didn't want to miss Easter.…

Every child grows up wanting something that they feel they can’t live without. No matter what that something is, it motivates the child to do whatever they have to do to get it. As a child, I have always been the type to take care of and keep every pair of shoes I get. The love I had for shoes was unexplainable and I often tended to go nuts if someone had worn them without asking. Still to this day I’m crazy about them and I have accepted the fact that I am a shoe fanatic. Every time I go shopping it’s a must I pick up a pair of shoes. When I was 13, I remember being mad at my mother because we went shopping but she wouldn’t buy me a pair of shoes. I remember it all like yesterday.…
