Life Without a Tv
Life without a Television

When my family's only television set went to the repair shop the other day, my parents, my sister, and I thought we would have a terrible week. How could we get through the long evenings in such a quiet house? What would it be like without all the shows to keep us company? We soon realized, though, that living without a television for a while was a stroke of good fortune. It became easy for each of us to enjoy some activities alone, to complete some postponed chores, and to spend rewarding time with each other and friends.

First of all, with no television to complete for our time, we found plenty of hours for personal interests. We all read more that week than we had read during the six months before. I personally started a habit of reading the newspapers every day, not just reading some sports articles, but actually enjoying editorials and opinion articles.
We each also enjoyed some hobbies we had ignored for ages. My father's old enthusiasm for carpentry returned , and my mother spent some time practicing some old cooking recepies.
In addition, my sister and I both stopped procrastinating with our homework. We both planned a homework schedule. Instead of watching television for the whole afternoon, as we used to do, my sister and I spent two hours every day doing homework in advance.

Second, we did chores that had been hanging over our heads for too long. There were many jobs around the house that had needed attention for some time. My father somehow managed to replace seven light bulbs from and old lamp that we have in the dinning room. I cleaned the garage and fixed my room's door which had been broken for more than two years!
We also had a chance to do some long-postponed shopping. I bought two pairs of jeans that I didn't have time to buy before. Before my television broke , going shopping was something that I never got to enjoy, but somehow this new situation has made me realize how much fun it is to share time shopping with my parents!
And each of us did some letter writing or other paperwork that was long overdue. I finally got to write several emails to my friends living in different parts of the world and my father had some office work done.

Finally, and probably most important, we spent time with each other. Instead of just being in the same room together while we stared at a screen, we actually talked for many pleasant hours. My mother and I never had deep conversations before, and in the course of that week , we got to know each other more than we did for the last 20 years. The communication between me and my sisters was much better now than it had ever been before. I think this was partially due to the time we spent together just talking about our lives and about different aspects of life.
Moreover, for the first time in years my family played some games together. My father was able to beat us playing monopoly as he used to do when I was only 12 years old. I have always loved playing Scrabble, and finally I got to play with my mother and sisters for hours.
And because we didn't have to worry about missing this or that show, we had some family friends over on a couple of evenings and spent an enjoyable time with them. After dinner we would have some drinks and just enjoy the good summer weather in the terrace while listening to music.
Once our television set returned, we were not prepared to put it in the attic. But we had a sense of how it can take over our lives if we are not careful. We are now more selective. We turn on the set for our favorite shows, certain sports events, and the news, but we don't leave it running all night. As a result, we find we can enjoy television and still have time left over for some activities and interests.

Is T.V. the root of all our family problems? In Television: The Plug-In Drug, the author Marie Winn believes just that. She argues that television was beneficial in bringing the family together back when it first came out, but now that every family has an average of two television sets, everyone watches it in a separate room, not connecting with their kin during pivotal moments like dinner or holidays. Instead of laughing, singing, and eating together, families sit in peace, away from each other mentally, and sometimes physically. Parents enjoy the quietness of a couple without children and don’t take proper care of their offspring through communicational stimulation, and children mind their own business, quietly soaking up the information that television hands to them.…

The family time that experts once believed the television would facilitate has backfired. It has been replaced with an everyday military regiment. Wake up, go to school, watch television, and go to bed. Parents have allowed the television to become the primary source for their children’s home life experience. Although this medium allows for peace within the home, the family dynamic suffers. Winn references the conflicts that family’s had to deal with, prior to the multi-television home, is an essential part in family life (233). The home has become another form of a care taking institution rather than an accumulation of memory making experiences that can and will follow the children into their adulthood.…

My Aunt Caprice owned a large house and a couple acres of land which my brother and I would roam anytime we visited. Every Christmas Eve my mother would drive us over to Aunt Caprice’s house to visit her family and other close family friends. My Uncle Roger would take me around the property and let me collect chicken eggs for him. This taught me the value of hard work and was a humbling experience for me in my youth. My cousins, Bryan and Brent were very close to my brother and I, we would often hang out in the backyard either jumping on the trampoline or playing video games with each other. Some of my favorite memories were spent at that house, especially on Christmas to see family or just to go over and watch Dallas Cowboys games with…

As if work wasn’t enough, I had to deal with my family and my fiancé. In the evenings, I had to do the household chores because my mother was taking care of my sickly grandmother and I had to run to do groceries, pay the bills and ensure my baby brother did his homework assignments and take him up in his revision as it was close to exams. Plus I had to cook dinner and since my step-father was away at his security job. If that weren’t enough, my fiancé and I bought a small condominium after I went to oversee…

I decided I was going to eliminate TV for two weeks. I don’t have cable at home, but I do have a few shows I watch on Hulu, and I own around 300 movies. I never could have imagined how much time I wasted sitting in front of my laptop every day. Although I didn’t watch four hours of TV a day, it was pretty close to three. Time, that could have been used for more profitable purposes, was ignored and I would say to myself instead: “I’ll think about that tomorrow”. Without the strong pull to see what happens next in my “shows” every night, I have been able to spend much more time with my family. Just like Colin experienced in his family life, I talk more with my family, play more board games, and a lot of our time together is centered around eating.…

I joined a community outreach program where we went to a surrounding town’s housing complex and helped the kids after school with homework. I worked with a student, who when I started was in kindergarten, his name was Jordian. When I first started going he could barely sit still in a chair, he could barely count 5 and was not close to reading. When I left my senior year he would come in and mostly everyday sit and start his homework. He was now adding without much difficulty and starting to learn multiplication. During reading time he would sit down and work on his reading. Helping the kids not only learn but make a positive impact on their lives is something I will keep with me forever.…

The beliefs of television have powerful influences on the United States’ culture. It is used as a purpose for entertaining oneself or passing time for most American adults and children. Some people use television as a media source to know what is happening in the local area and around the world. A major belief for many Americans is that television is the main object in the typical American home. We all face our furniture towards the television and act like it is a shrine by placing expensive things around it. We believe that bigger is better and this all reflects in our social class. We spend many hours per week in front of it gazing at it and listening to its content. For most people it is addictive and distractive, yet most homes have at least one television.…

The introduction of television to society is one of the most significant social events in the twentieth century. The first advertisements for the television pictured a family gathered around the set with “Sis on Mom’s lap, Buddy perched on the arm of Dad’s chair, Dad with his arm around Mom’s shoulder” (Winn 352). Today, ninety percent of American households possess a television and the average American home has more television sets than people. The average daily viewing time per adult in the United States is 4.5 hours, making television the most important leisure activity among Americans (Bruni and Stanca).…
