To which degree do I expose my distaste for writing technical or academia worthy essays? I could tell you that I had a horrendous experience which scarred me for life that on occasion demands psychiatric attention but that would be wishful thinking and a false presentation of myself. Maybe I can illustrate how over the many years from kindergarten to the final senior year of high school has my permeable brain been bashed with constant rules, regulations and format guidelines that I must write in to “properly” display my thoughts and ideas. Only to then realize that us as human beings, speak and display body language in a way that contradicts the all mighty Literature format and guidelines. Needless to say I loathe writing at any level of a formatted essay or paper to the point that I would rather attend defensive driving or jury duty multiple times a week for a supplemental grade instead of writing. However though, a new found respect for writing came to me not in my college years writing research papers but as a U.S. Navy recruit sitting in boot camp in Great Lake, Illinois.
It had been about ten hours since I had last eaten, hopping from plane to train back to plane made it difficult to eat and that fact my mind was racing with last minute regrets of what I got myself into kept flooding my brain. I finally arrived to Great Lake, Illinois boot camp installation eighteen hours after I departed Houston, Texas, being shuffled off the bus one by one the lines we were in seem to grow exponentially. In a matter of minutes what just seemed to be a couple hundred turned to a couple of thousand, as we made our way into the processing area we get searched for anything besides the clothes on our backs. Once a group was all cleared we were packed into a room by columns of fifty by at least fifteen wide due to the fact that’s all I could see. Then I look up and through a window realize the sun is back up, with no clocks around this is the only way I

On the first day, volunteers and those drafted, including Joe and Jack, were put onto an old, decrepit plane set out for Parris Island in South Carolina for boot camp training. When they arrived at the terminal, the men were loaded onto a bus filled with civilians. Sergeants stormed onto the bus and began yelling and swearing at the men, which scared them, but would prepare them for what was to come in the following weeks. Joe and Jack were assigned to Platoon 1000 as riflemen. On the first night at Parris Island, a man was missing from the ranks and every man in the barracks was awoken in the middle of the night and…

Truth be told, it’s been a few years since the last time I walked into a writing extensive course like English 1302. The last time that I sat in front of a computer, and slaved away for hours trying to create the perfect paper was in 2011, during my first semester at Texas Tech. It was English 101, and people had that it’s a class that I should not take lightly, but of course I thought I knew better. Let’s just say that I figured out, I was not the greatest writer in the world after all, but high school definitely made me think I was. Before I entered into my first semester of college level English, it was not unordinary for me to write a paper that received applause from teachers all the way through senior year. I wrote essays on books, such as the “The Great Gatsby” to critically breaking apart poems. One assignment that I remember vividly was my critical summary over Robert Frost’s Poem, “The Road Less Traveled”. Alas, those easy days are gone. Most of my time now is spent typing up emails to staff and teachers. Since I have been enrolled at Texas Tech, I have worked in Texas Tech’s School of Law in the Administrative Office. Much my work is behind a screen typing up emails. It has taught me a lot, so I feel as though I’ve become pretty proficient when it comes to writing up formal messages or relaying information in a professional way. I believe that I have a decent amount of experience when it comes to my writing abilities, and hopefully that will continue to grow throughout my time in this class.…

Every Saturday I was reluctant to wake up. Why should I bother going? You wait outside, freezing with no jacket. To be briefed minutes later by an aggressively opened door, and drill instructors in your face. Yelling at you, how bad your uniform looks, how you should quit, pushing you physically beyond your limits. I mean I knew I was out of shape, but it was slightly embarrassing throwing up 3 times during this course. In front of everyone. The instructors didn’t care; they’ll mock you for that to. But don’t you dare laugh or smirk, it was like breaking a commandment. It wasn’t until after I graduated, that I learned this was part of their system. They break you down until you feel like nothing, then build you back up better than ever. How was I supposed to know? It was hard to think when spit from instructors was flying in your face. To this day I don’t know how, but I persisted. I woke up every Saturday, for 18 weeks straight and graduated. It was the very first time I felt proud of myself, and although she won’t admit it, for my mother as well. My class started with hundreds, only about 30 graduated. I was one of those, I finally realized what I was capable…

The next thing I know is that the train starts moving. It moves for three more days and I am crammed in one car with twenty other people who were enlisted. Finally, we arrive at Fort Stewart. I immediately get off the train and walk off to the barrack arrangements. After that, I walk to my barracks and find a bed that will be mine. I unload my stuff and change into a tee-shirt with some baggy green jeans with tears on the knees. At that moment everybody else came in, found their beds, and changed. Then a grumpy drill sergeant came in and screamed at us like the way mom would scream at me after I threw up on the table after our once a week veggie dinner. First, we start off with doing an obstacle course. Running and running I come up to a wall with ropes dangling from the top. I rapidly climb half way and see the guy next to me fall and break his arm. Finally, I get to the top and make my way down. After that, I am at the point where I can jump. The next thing is army crawling through mud with barbed wire above our head. It might seem nasty at first but it is very refreshing from how tired we are. When I came out I saw another guy that had his entire arm cut up from the wire. The last course was swimming across the lake while officers shoot blanks at us to make us experience the sound of war and in the most dangerous situation. By the time that is done, it is time to go to sleep. In the morning an officer plays the…

Writing class in my life has always been centered on analyzing mediums such as books, articles, movies, poems, and other things of that nature. The analysis would always consist of considering both viewpoints of an argument: what the author is saying and what the author is contrasting his or her viewpoints with. In addition to this, I have always been expected to incorporate my own thoughts on the subject of analysis. I feel as if I am a very good formal writer on serious subjects, and a not-so-great writer when it comes to talking about my own opinions and thoughts on an open topic. The best writing that I have ever done and was very proud of was the final paper for my Music Education philosophy course last semester. For this assignment we were expected to research a certain pedagogy, write about it, and synthesize our own pedagogy from what we had learned about that semester about all of the different pedagogies. Over the years from my first actual writing course in 9th grade, writing to me has developed from something I did to please the teacher into…

Over the course of the past three months, I have had the distinct pleasure of testing my writing capabilities through the Introduction to College Writing course. I have always had a passion for writing in all forms, but in previous years, the course work in grade-level English classes have been unchallenging of my writing ability. I have been heavily involved in Bonneville High School’s newspaper through journalism since my freshman year. This allowed me to strengthen my writing capability as I was drafting throughout the entire school year. I have never truly had to apply myself until I enrolled in English 101. Since the beginning of the class, I have faced various hardships while writing essays in unfamiliar styles, such as drafting a response to a scholarly article and synthesizing opposing perspectives. I have learned that I am more than capable in writing in different styles and that all of my work will be quality content regardless of the topic. I overcame the obstacles that have challenged me, and my essays exhibit that I am fully prepared to continue my work in English 102.…

To start off with, the overall environment of being part of an AP/IB English class all throughout high school has made a positive affect on me. This has not only affected my familiarization with college level essays but I know what is expected from a higher level english course. As I have mentioned in my previous essay, I have written papers that were up to seventeen pages long. When I was in high school I often thought, why do I have to write so much, it would annoy me that every month was a new essay, now the idea of writing a lengthy paper has…

For the past four years, I have been heavily involved in the cheerleading team. I have been a member of this squad since our very first practice in the cafeteria. This sport is my passion, and to prove it, I left my position on the volleyball team so that I could 100% dedicate myself to cheer. Dedication is important to me and I have never missed a practice without a doctor’s note. Since I have joined the team, I have not only grown as a skilled cheerleader, but as a person. It has improved my leadership skills and my social skills. I completely believe that I am the most qualified for the position of team captain, and I have many reasons why.…

Every time I am told to write about myself I get short and terrifying flashbacks of my middle school days where I, barely a teenager, had to spit out an entire page journal answering a question and relating it to myself. After three years I learned how to write those journals in about twenty minutes and have it ready to be turned in with little to no actual emotion in the piece. Now, barely an adult, I hope to have more emotion in my writing along with less complaining. While I cannot completely quit on disliking writing for “pleasure” I can put my best foot forward starting with this paper. My four motivations to write are mainly to graduate from college, to tell a story, to use my own forms of creativity and to teach lessons.…

In college, there is nearly a writing assignment in every class. It doesn’t even matter if it’s a math class. The teachers will always find a way to squeeze in an essay assignment. As a result of that, it can be detrimental to my grades. With this in mind, I still try to earn a good grade. Also, my writing issues will not be tolerated. My future profession will involve important information that needs to be typed about my patients. Hopefully, my writing skills will drastically improve by the time I graduate college.…
