LESSON PLAN

I. DESCRIPTION OF THE GROUP OF LEARNERS There are 20 students in this group, 15 women and 5 men. Most of them are between 20 and 25 years old. This general English course is for intermediate level students. They can speak English but are not confident very much. Almost the students enter this course into improving their reading, speaking, writing and listening skill to get higher English level. The students of this course are mainly students in universities, some of them go to work.
II. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES After this lesson, students will be able to:
Skim for main ideas for the text.
Scan for specific information in the reading.
Analysis and summary the main contents of text.
Discuss about questions in the text together and explain their answers for the text to others.
Compare their ideas with author’s opinions in the reading.
III. LANGUAGE ITEMS IN THIS LESSON The text book: Mosaic 2 for reading.
Chapter 1: Language and Learning.
Skills for reading: Scanning and skimming.
Intergrating skills: deduce meaning, detailed information, speaking.
IV. RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHER LESSONS The lesson is part 1 in the first chapter of the text book that is the first stage to develop students’ reading skills. However, students were taken a pre – test to test their reading skills and ability before learning this lesson. They were also introduced and practiced some techniques or skills of reading skills, for example: scanning, skimming, …. with short paragragh. After learning skim and scan skills in this lesson, they will move to part 2, 3 in chapter 1 which help them to learn and practice for other reading skills.
V. METHODS AND TECHNIQUES This lesson is to teach scanning and skimming

    Cooperative groups are used as a strategy for teaching ELL students. This strategy has been proven effective for teaching content material as well as a second language. In a cooperative group situation students are each given the opportunity to speak and participate. As students work in a group with their peers they can observe the natural conversational language. These face-to-face interactions will promote language skills among students that are learning English. Interesting and well-structured assignments are best for this type of learning situation.
