My Leadership Theory and Practice

This is certainly one of the most insightful course that I have had taken so far from this EMBA program. I truly enjoyed the way how this course could stimulate my thinking, and has helped to broaden my mind to help me to cope with different issues and situations in the future. Most important, the sharing from the high profiled speakers has benefited me a great deal by understand what are their approaches in a real corporate environment.

The keyword that we have learnt in the first session is “Consciously Competent”, which well defines how a leader must be. For a leader, if he is not aware of his own strength and his organization’s competence, how could he make the right decision when there is a challenge. If he does not understand his own people and unaware the surrounding environment, how could he design the right path that the company should be heading.

The most important concept that I have learnt is the 3P’s – Purpose, People, Process, as for a leader, it is very crucial to manage all of these ingredients. For purpose, it is of vital importance for the leader and the team to know and understand the goal that need to be achieved, and why this goal has been set in the first place. Without this clear message, the team could not be in synchronized direction which will hinder the progress in some point.

For people, a leader must understand the ability of each of the team member that existed in order to place them in the proper role with the right responsibility. It’s about knowing the strengths, weaknesses, capabilities and capacities of the people in an organization so that he will know who to hire, who to retain, and who to fire. With this backbone information, the leader could effectively make correct delegation of work which will certainly give better chance for a successful execution, as it is not possible for the leader to micro manage matters.
