Leadership is defined as “a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal” (Northouse, 2007). Managers, supervisors, and team leads are given the authority to accomplish certain tasks and objectives, however this power does not make a person a leader. This assigned authority only means that this person is “the boss.” Leadership differs in that it makes the followers want to achieve goals rather than bossing people around (Rowe, 2007). In other words, one can be assigned to a leadership position but one without such designated title can be a leader by influencing others to do great things.…

One might say the term leadership demonstrates qualities like commanding, direct, bold, and courageous while others think of servant leaders who give to the community and stay in the shadows. A stereotype associated with a leader is someone who orders people around while yelling or doing other things in a bold manner. After reading this book, you will learn that that stereotype is not completely accurate because we tend to forget the leaders who instead of boldly direct people, stay in the background and let their pupils take the jump at the situations using their own personal skills. These are just two forms of leadership that are used in the book and in everyday life. This symbolism plays a large role throughout the book, enabling us to look at leaders in…

The most prominent example of a leader (a positional leader, even) is Philoctetes. The satyr demonstrates one of Kouzes and Posner’s (2006) two commitments contained within the category, “Enable Others to Act,” one of their “Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership” (p. 14). Phil, in one instance “strengthen[ed]” Hercules “by increasing self-determination and developing competence” (p. 22). Hercules, having lost his sword while trying to protect the fair Megara from a hideous monster, has a difficult time gaining the upper hand on his adversary. Herc’s faithful companion Pegasus races to offer his aid to Hercules, but Phil prevents Pegasus from doing so, saying that Hercules needs to overcome this on his own. Phil leaves Hercules to succeed on his own; Phil trusted that Hercules was capable, and by allowing Hercules to try and succeed individually, his competence and self-determination were developed. Hercules built confidence and was now an improved…
