In the article it stated that Leaders have to deal with searching for new fitting identities. We do not expect leadership from only leaders. Followers can also show leadership. Heros astonish people and that is another characteristic that Bilbo has. Bilbo has just given the Arkenstone to Bard without Thorin knowing so there weren’t be a war between men, elf, and dwarves. And Gandalf comes up to him and says. “ ‘Well done! Mr. Baggins!’ he said, clapping Bilbo on the back. ‘There is always more about you than anyone expects!’ It was Gandalf.” (271-272) Bilbo is astonishing because he can do things that you would not expect of him. He uses his courage and his brains to help people. He goes to limits that someone has to be very brave to do and that is what he did. He makes Gandalf and many others flummoxed. Gandalf says that ‘ more about you’ he is saying that you never quite know what he is going to do. It shows that you may see a coward but he is a great hero. ‘Anyone expects!’ shows that people judge Bilbo by what he looks like. But you should never judge a book by its cover which is a proverb. After watching this movie, I noticed that it has great examples of leadership in it. The main leadership themes of this movie are servant leadership, leadership as resistance, group roles, team leadership, trait approach, skills approach. These few themes are demonstrated throughout the entire movie. The first them I will discuss is servant leadership. A servant leader is one who serves others first before himself or herself. There are ten characteristics of a servant leader and they are: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people and building community. Samwise Gamgee and Frodo are two great examples of a servant leaders. Sam is always caring for Frodo and does everything for Frodo and he meets some of the characteristics of the servant leader. Frodo is a servant leader because he is risking his own life to save everyone else from destruction. The next leadership theme listed is leadership as resistance. Throughout the movie Fordo is leading but he has to constantly battle the temptation of the rings power. The resistance make leading more difficult due to the constant battle within. An example could be described as a leaders Achilles’ heel. The leadership theme is group roles. There is a large group role in this movie. The group in this movie called the Fellowship of the Ring. The fellowship has to all work together to carry out the task at hand. Role of the group must be able to function in times of change. For example, Aragorn had become the main leader of the fellowship when Gandalf was taken into the darkness by the ancient demon. This show that the group leader’s role had to change but the group still functioned well after the great change. The next leadership theme listed is team leadership. Team leadership is a great way to get things down. A team is a group…

Bilbo learns the lesson of journeying and starts to learn leadership. Bilbo’s third challenge is Gollum. Bilbo gains knowledge of the ring, pity, pure terror, greed and how to make wise decisions. Bilbo’s fourth challenge is Mirkwood and the Wood Elves. Bilbo learns to man up, take leadership, and make decisions for the group and cooperation. Bilbo’s fifth challenge is Lonely Mountain and Smaug. Bilbo learns about pure evil and treachery. Bilbo’s last challenge is the Battle of Five Armies. As John C. Maxwell once said, “A leader is someone who knows the ways, goes the way, and shows the way.” An ideal leader would be someone who is altruistic, educated, and audacious. In the novel, The Hobbit, authored by J.R.R Tolkien, one of the protagonists, Thorin Oakenshield is said to be one of the most prodigious commanders. However, Thorin is almost the complete opposite of the traits and qualities listed previously.…

In The Hobbit J.R.R Tolkien is criticized at times for his racist and race-based elements that he uses in this historic novel. Tolkien uses the characters in The Hobbit and symbolism of the good versus evil to depict that racism in society is destructive. Tolkien was known for his legendarium, which is Tolkien’s imagined world of Arda. Tolkien, throughout the story, references topics related to racism, such as superiority and bloodlines. While Tolkien thought that racism would be destructive for the human race, he still incorporated it into this novel. Its hard to depict if Tolkien is writing about racism but there is not a doubt that in The Hobbit there is racial division and it sets up great talking points. In The Hobbit the author J.R Tolkien uses racism through symbolism and the manipulation of characters and their action to cause controversy in the story and to show that racism is destructive for everyone.…

Hobbits, dragons, orcs, goblins… that is what most people think of when they think J.R.R Tolkien. What they do not think about is Tolkien as who he is: a human. J.R.R Tolkien was obsessed with learning. It was instilled in him from early on. The different ways that learned in his life, including his travel, the death in his life, family religion, linguistics, and, of course, academia, have influenced his work such as The Hobbit. From an early age, Tolkien had major events going on in his life that would shape his literary experience for years to come.…
