1.0 Introduction
The Labrador retriever is the most versatile dog for the active family. The Labrador is just as comfortable in the field, working as a hunting partner, or at home acting as a family member. Labs are easily trained, being naturally patient and obedient, but they are probably not the best guard dog.
Labradors tend to be friendlier than aggressive, making the Lab my personal choice for our family.
Most people think that the Labrador’s origin must be from the Labrador Island, but were actually developed in Newfoundland. The Labrador was developed to aid fisherman in the retrieval of fishing nets and to haul the daily catch to the market. The Labrador gained its name Labrador retriever, when they were brought to the Western countries like Great Britain and the United
States by trades ships enroute from Labrador in the past (Bragg, 2011). The Labrador retriever did not gain notability as a Hunting dog until the breed was further developed in England and prized for its keen sense of smell (Canis Major Publications, 2012). This paper reviews characteristics of these Labrador Retrievers that enables them to partner and even assist humans due to their hunting and adaptation abilities, it also cover precautions that a Labrador dog owner should keep in mind before purchasing this breed of dog to avoid drawbacks.
