3-2-1 Assessment Sheet
1. What are three key things you learned about the Dark Ages in this lesson? Please be sure to include at least two complete sentences for each one.
A. The Dark Ages were influenced by not one, but many different cultures. The main cultures include the Celtics, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings.
B. England was occupied for hundreds of years by the Romans before the Dark Ages even began. Because of the long Roman rule, the country adopted the Latin language and Christianity.
C. Despite the name the “Dark Ages”, the Anglo-Saxons were not completely violent people. Their love for literary themes such as heroism and chivalry shaped literature during that time.
2. Explain two things that you would still like to know about the development of Old English. Please be sure to include at least one complete sentence for each one.
A. How long did the development of the English language take to modernize to what it is today?
B. Did different parts of old England use outdated English? In better words, how did the English language change, and how was it spread?
3. In one paragraph, describe how the language of English evolved during the Dark Ages. What were the influences that changed it over the years? Which ethnic backgrounds were involved in this evolution? Please write at least four sentences for this response.
A. The English language during the Dark Ages changed because of constant takeovers of different cultures. When the Romans took over the Celtics, the language of the land changed too, and it was the same when the Anglo-Saxons ruled. The language went from Celtic, to Latin, to German, and then developed into Old English. There was never a standardized English language in the Dark Ages because it was a constantly developing language.
