She recently decided to turn her talent into a business and has achieved a long portfolio and clientele list that reflects her growth as a make-up artist. What separates Kaylyn from other make-up artists here at Mason is that her efforts are service based. She strives to promote self-love and self confidence amongst young girls and minority women. Kaylyn donates proceeds from most of her events to charities for minority women. Her number one charity to donate to is Black Girls Rock! Inc., but she does donate to other charities.

Soon after, Kaylyn began to experiment with make-up looks that she learned online on her friends. She also began to shop in make-up stores like MAC and ULTA.
Once Kaylyn arrived to college she began practicing on new friends. Her work began to attract attention and she was soon hired to do make-up for campus fashion shows and other special events.

When women wear makeup they feel more sociable as opposed to not wearing any, they can feel powerful and unstoppable. Society, however, looks down on women for wearing makeup because it has sprouted the belief that makeup is synonymous with artificiality and showing something that is not real when in reality, it does the opposite. In Kate Bayless’ article, “7 Reasons Why Wearing Makeup Can Make You a Stronger Woman,” she explains how makeup, “gives you confidence and makes you feel more in control” and provides people with a masterful and beautiful suit of armor. In Cecilia Meis’ article, “Michelle Phan’s Masterpiece,” Meis probes Michelle Phan on what exactly makeup is to her and how it shapes her way of like. Phan strays from the traditional title of a makeup artist and expresses , "I am not trying to say I'm a makeup artist. I'm not a makeup artist; I'm a beauty creator. I create content and I use beauty as my vessel, as my palette, and that's how I express myself," Phan says. Phan states how simply labeling someone as a makeup artist is incredibly broad and limits the definition and extents of her and others’ talents. In American culture, women are marketed products because the businesses feed off of women’s view of their true beauty not being good enough without enhancements by makeup. According to Christie Wilcox, “Makeup works because it exaggerates or completely fabricates our natural signs of youth, fertility and sexual availability, thus making a woman seem more appealing. In other words, it works because it’s a darn good lie (Wilcox 2).” True beauty is what a woman looks like when she wakes up in the morning, not by what she prepared in the mirror for thirty minutes. True beauty is what you naturally look like. A women’s beauty is not defined by what she looks like when she adds makeup rather what she looks like in her natural state. Makeup is not…
