Katniss Everdeen's Strength

Do you think that Katniss seems unsure of herself at times? her abilities?, her strengths? and lacks the confidence to believe that she can and will be able to survive? Where in the story do we see examples of her overcoming her fear by working hard and not giving up and doing the right thing in order to survive the realities of her harsh existence? Find examples from the story where the protagonist, Katniss, shows that even though she is afraid she never gives up her fight to survive and to do the right thing.
In the opening chapter, when she gets up out of bed very early and goes out into the woods illegally to hunt for food for her family.
When she is looking for food for her family and is starving after her father dies and Peeta saves her life by burning the bread on purpose and throwing it in the street so she could take it and save herself and her family from starvation.
In the novel, The Hunger Games , by Suzanne Collins, the protagonist, Katniss Everdeen, oftentimes seems insecure about her ability to survive in the face of hard times and adversity but she never gives up her fight to survive and to do the right thing. The reader is first introduced to Katniss in Chapter 1 of the novel. Katniss is the narrator of the story and speaks to us in the first person present tense. We learn in this chapter that Katniss is the provider for her family. Her father died in a mining accident, and her mother has become incapacitated by depression and is unable to work to support the family. The task of supporting the family falls upon her shoulders when she is only 11, and Katniss accepts her duty to help without any hesitation but does feel lonely and afraid. She loves her little sister Prim more than anything and wants to do everything possible to keep her alive so she goes out into the woods illegally to hunt and risks being caught so she and her family can live. Also, before Katniss was able to participate in the drawing for tesserae, when she, her sister and mother are starving, Katniss takes to the streets looking for any food that might be lying around. The reader can see from this that she is a fighter and because she didn’t give up but went out into the cold to find food for her family her efforts are rewarded. Peeta sees her losing her battle to survive and defies his own mother by burning the bread so he can throw it out to Katniss so she can keep living. Katniss then takes the burnt bread home. She and her family have a feast on the bread which gives her a new outlook on her ability to keep her family alive. The burnt bread lands near a dandelion. The dandelion reminds her of her father’s teaching about eating dandelions to stay alive. Because Katniss didn’t give up the fight to survive even when she was afraid and unsure, her efforts to do the right thing pay off for her and she comes to believe through the kindness of others and hard work that she can and will be able to survive her harsh reality. I believe this is also true not just for fictional characters in books but also for real people living in the real world. If a person works hard, believes in their abilities even when afraid they too can find a way to survive in the world if they will work hard and not give up doing what is right.
