About Minor Subject Studies for Students in Teacher Education
The choice of minor subjects defines how students qualify as teachers. To obtain a post in basic education and general upper secondary education, the ability to teach a second subject if often required (for example mathematics), while in vocational education and adult education as well as in corporate training, a minor subject is considered as a means to complete and expand the teacher's knowledge of the major subject.

The first minor subject for all students in teacher education is pedagogical studies for teachers. It is recommended that the second minor subject in the OPE1 alternative is basic and subject studies (60 cr) in a subject generally taught at school, such as mathematics, physics or chemistry. This way, the students obtain the formal qualifications to teach the minor subject as well. The minor subject studies should be taken according to the requirements of the teacher education line of the subject in question.

In the OPE2 alternative the choice of the second minor subject is less limited. Suitable minor subjects are for example cognitive science, digital media, multimedia, communication, economics, entrepreneurship or leadership. In the OPE2 alternative only basic studies (25 cr) in the second minor subject are required.

Minor Subjects in Bachelor Studies
The Bachelor studies in teacher education should contain either

basic studies in two subjects (50 cr), of which one should be basic studies in Pedagogical studies for teachers (or other corresponding studies, 25 cr), or subject studies in one subject (60 cr).
Minor Subjects in Master Studies
During Master studies, minor subject studies are continued so that for students in the OPE1 alternative subject studies in at least two subjects are included

pedagogical studies for teachers (60 cr) subject studies in another subject (60 cr)
In the OPE2 alternative the following minor subjects are required

pedagogical studies for teachers or in adult education (60 cr) basic studies in one subject (25 cr)
Recommended Schedule for Minor Subject Studies
The following two tables represent the recommended schedules for minor subject studies in the OPE1 and OPE2 alternatives.

Preceding 2001 no regulations were in place to ensure that teachers in further education were trained in the skills of teaching. Therefore the further education teachers were a mixture of skilled professionals with or without a qualification in their subject. There was no national system and there were no standards for teaching to which the qualifications could be mapped. Many of the courses offered in further education colleges were vocational, and many of the teaching staff were appointed…

An educational institution performs a significant function of providing learning experiences to lead their students from the darkness of ignorance to the light of knowledge. The key personnel in the institutions who play an important role to bring about this transformation are teachers. As stated by NCTE (1998) in Quality Concerns in Secondary Teacher Education, ―The teacher is the most important element in any educational program. It is the teacher who is mainly responsible for implementation of the educational process at any stage.‖ This shows that it is imperative to invest in the preparation of teachers, so that the future of a nation is secure. The importance of competent teachers to the nation‘s school system can in no way be overemphasized. The National Curriculum Framework 2005…
