SUSTAINABLE DESIGN: K2 Apartments
Global population is rising and it is a fact that people are living longer. According to the study conducted by United Nations, research found that there will be more than 10 billion people living on earth by the year 2100. It is also no secret that there is also Global Warming and Climate Change that the world is facing now. Population rise is maybe one of the greatest reasons why sustainable development is needed nowadays. It is a 96 unit project initiated by Victorian Office of Housing and designed by Designlnc Melbourne. This sustainable design incorporates the philosophy of combining sustainable architecture into the conceptual basis of the design. K2 sustainable apartments features many different sustainable characteristics that’s why it is called a sustainable structure. Some of the features of this structure includes minimizing greenhouse gas emission and water consumption and promoting reduce, reuse and recycle system. K2 apartment have combined the general idea of a healthy building and environment. This project also considered the importance of social and economic aspect of sustainability as having great significance as the natural environmental aspects. K2 apartments have been designed accurately to meet the needs of being a sustainable one. Its site plan was planned successfully because the building are oriented on an east west axis so that maximum northern exposure will be attained and were astounded on the site to permit for the creation of public and private courtyard spaces. The distance and height of four buildings between the front and back pairs was analyse carefully and calculated thoughtfully to ensure that all unit may receive northern sun all year around. …show more content…
When the rain comes, roof water is gathered from all roof surfaces of units and stored in central water tanks. The collected water is used to supplement main supply for domestic hot water. This water is equivalent to a reduction of nearly 40% in the total runoff from the site to the council system. The system of wet downpipe eradicates the necessity for any pumping to the tanks. Collected rainwater is sterilised and pumped to the hot water plants so that it will be added to the water supply. To minimise water consumption of the units, water efficient fittings and fixtures are installed and to filter storm water, the landscape treatment are
