K’ang Hsi was the was the third son of the Shunzhi emperor. Upon Shunzhi’s sudden death from smallpox K’ang Hsi was instantly put to power over his five brothers. His chosen reign name was Kangxi which means “Peaceful harmony.” Because K’ang Hsi was not quite seven years old, his government was run by four conservative Manchu courtiers from the preceding reign. One of the first political acts of the for imperial advisors was to replace the so-called Thirteen Offices with a Neiwufu, or Office of Household. In 1667, advised by Sonin and other ministers, the Kangxi emperor began attending to affairs of state at the age of thirteen, as his father had done before him. He ruled only in name, however; the real power was still family in the hands of the four advisors. Sonin soon died, and Oboi who was apart of the the four conservative Manchu courtiers, became a virtual dictator. This put Suksha to death for an alleged crime and the cowing Ebilun into submission.
