Stories have the ability to change lives. They transport us to worlds we have never seen before and take us on emotional rollercoasters. They open our eyes to the world around us and help us see it in a new light. All of this is made possible by the amazing characters that lead the plot. In the case of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Judy Boone is one of those Characters. Judy has a significant influence on the plot, provides the reader with a unique perspective on the story’s content and, without her, the book would be totally different. Her role in the story is certainly one of immeasurable importance and that will be clear for everyone to see.

Firstly, it was her actions that caused the major events in the book to occur. When Judy decided, two years earlier, to go to London with Mr. Shears, it sets off a chain of events that shaped the story’s plot. This is because, after she left, Ed developed feeling for Mrs. Shears. However, she did not return his feelings which caused him to become angry with her and kill her dog. Christopher ended up finding the body and decided to solve the murder. These events ultimately led him to discover the truth about his mothers’ affair, argue with his dad and run away to live with Judy. Secondly, Judy has a great deal of influence on Ed’s emotions and behaviour. After she left him, it became much harder for Ed to control his emotions, especially his anger. When Ed discovered that Christopher had spoken to Mrs. Alexander, he was very upset and lashed out at him. Christopher wrote “father interrupted me and grabbed hold of my arm really hard. Father had never grabbed hold of me like that before. So, I was very surprised when he grabbed me.” (Haddon, p. 82) This
